Voles in the Lawn: The Runways Fix Themselves
Melting snow reveals the runways, and the voles usually left with it. Illinois says the lawn regrows by summer — the damage worth acting on is on your trees. Guide for New Hampshire, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

The animal has usually left
The sequence is worth understanding, because it explains why this looks like an emergency and is not one.
Voles are active all winter. They do not hibernate, and they do not want to be seen — so once there is lasting snow, they travel in the gap between the snowpack and the turf, clipping grass as they go and running the same lines over and over. Nothing above ground can see them there. That is the whole appeal.
Then the snow melts and the entire winter’s network appears in a weekend. Illinois Extension puts it in one line:
“Melting snow reveals paths of chewed grass from a family of voles.”
What you are looking at is a record, not a population. The cover that made your lawn safe for them is the cover that just disappeared, and voles move to where there is still cover.
This is also why the picture differs by state. Voles need snow that lasts, not snow that falls. In New Hampshire the closed season runs from first frost — Early September in the North Country and the high valleys; mid-October on the Seacoast — to last frost — Mid-May inland and at elevation, late April along the coast — which is a full month of growing season between Colebrook and Portsmouth. Thirty seconds, and it decides everything downstream — because a vole is a rodent and a mole is not, which means one can be baited and the other cannot.
The runway. Penn State: “The most easily identifiable sign of meadow voles is an extensive surface runway system with numerous burrow openings.” The travel lanes are “about 1½ inches wide”. They run at grass level, they wind, they connect small holes going down into the soil, and there are no mounds. A mole leaves raised ridges and round conical piles of soil; a vole leaves a flattened, clipped path.
The hole that gives the game away. Clemson records a detail that resolves the most confusing case — a lawn with both animals: voles “dig characteristic golf ball-sized exit holes in previously established mole tunnels.” So a mole ridge with clean round holes punched into it is not one animal doing two things; it is a vole using a tunnel a mole dug. Which matters because the mole is eating grubs and earthworms while the vole, in Clemson’s words, is a vegetarian that eats “the roots and stems of plants.” Only one of them is damaging your plants, and only one of them takes bait.
The tooth marks, if anything has been chewed. Penn State gives them as “about 1⁄8 inch wide, 3⁄8 inch long, and 1⁄16 inch or more deep” — which is the measurement that separates vole damage from rabbit damage.
The animal, if you see one. Short tail, not a long one. Blunt rounded snout. It looks like a chunky mouse that has been sat on.
Penn State also notes there is more than one species doing this: “Four species of voles occur in Pennsylvania: the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), the woodland (or pine) vole (Microtus pinetorum), the red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi), and the rock vole (Microtus chrotorrhinus).” The meadow vole is the one that makes surface runways. The woodland vole works underground and leaves small conical soil piles, which is exactly the sign people read as a mole.

The lawn part usually repairs itself
Here is the sentence that should stop most of the panic buying, from Illinois Extension:
“If you are upset by the runways created by voles in your lawn, these areas often regrow by the time we reach summer.”
But that depends on your grass, and the difference is mechanical. A runway is a narrow strip where the grass was clipped to the crown. Closing it means something has to grow sideways into it:
- Rhizomatous grasses — Kentucky bluegrass above all — send out underground stems and genuinely fill a gap on their own. Illinois’s sentence is straightforwardly true for these lawns.
- Bunch grasses — tall fescue, perennial ryegrass — grow from the crown outward and do not run. A runway through a bunch-grass lawn thins out and stays a line, sometimes for a whole season, until something puts seed in it.

View on AmazonEither way, do not fertilize the runways to force them shut. A lawn coming out of a northern winter is dealing with more than voles, and pushing nitrogen into damaged turf before it is growing is the same mistake covered in winter lawn care.
The damage that does not grow back
This is the part worth acting on, and it is not on the lawn.
Voles gnaw bark, and they do it at the ground line where snow hid them all winter. Take the bark off all the way round a young trunk and the tree is girdled: the tissue that moves sugars down to the roots is gone, and no amount of watering brings it back.
Illinois has seen it at scale:
“I have seen entire peach orchards ravaged by voles as they chewed the bark off at the base of the trunk.”
So the useful thing to do the week the snow leaves is not to buy anything. It is to walk every young, newly planted or thin-barked tree and shrub and look at the bark from the soil line up to about six inches. Damage on one side may survive. Damage all the way around will not, and the tree is worth replacing rather than nursing.
Why killing them is not the strategy
The reproduction numbers explain why this category is full of products with poor ratings. Penn State:
“1 to 5 litters per year”, with “litter sizes range from 1 to 11 young, but usually average 3 to 6 young”, and females sexually mature in “35 to 40 days”.
And the population behaviour:
“Population levels generally peak every 2 to 5 years; however, these cycles are not predictable.”
Read those together. A yard cleared of voles sits inside a landscape that is producing more of them on a five-week generation clock, and the peak years are not something you can plan around. Removal is a treatment for this winter. It does not change next winter.
That is why every extension source leads with habitat rather than control — and it is also why the honest advice below costs almost nothing.
What actually changes next winter
Three measures, all of them from the two sources, all of them done in autumn before the first lasting snow.
Take the cover away. Penn State: keep ground cover at “3 to 6 inches” through regular mowing. Illinois: “Keeping grass mowed short reduces food and cover.” Voles need something to hide under, and long grass going into winter is exactly that. The last mow of the season matters more than any other for this specific problem.
Clemson adds dethatching to the same list — “keep turfgrass mowed and dethatched regularly, and keep mulch cleared from around tree bases” — which is worth noting because thatch is cover at ground level even on a lawn that is mown short. A tight, short lawn with half an inch of thatch under it still gives a vole somewhere to run.
Trapping, if you go that way. Clemson’s version is specific about two things people get wrong: “snap traps baited with apples or peanut butter and oatmeal are an excellent way to catch voles. Set the traps along runways or near the exit holes, ensuring that the trap is placed with the trigger end toward the runway.” And then the part that decides whether it fires at all: “place a box or bucket over the trap as voles prefer to take the bait from under cover.” An uncovered trap on an open lawn is a trap in the one place a vole avoids.
Clear the mulch off the trunks. Penn State: mulch “2 feet or more from the bases of trees”, and crushed stone “3 to 4 inches deep” around trunks where you want a permanent answer. Illinois’s minimum version: “Leave a three-inch gap between mulch and the base of trees.” A mulch ring piled against a trunk is a heated, covered corridor leading to bark.
Exclude them from what matters. Penn State: “¼-inch hardware cloth” in “wire cylinders 18 to 24 inches high” set “4 to 6 inches deep”. Illinois agrees on the mesh — “Mesh openings in any barriers need to be one-quarter inch or less” — and buries it “six to eight inches into the ground”. Both numbers work; the mesh size is the part that is not negotiable, because a vole goes through anything wider.
If you do trap, Penn State’s method is “mouse-sized snap traps at burrow openings or in runways”, baited with a “peanut butter-oatmeal mixture or apple slices” — set in the runway itself, because that is where the animal travels.
About the products, plainly
We are not carding a vole control product on this page, and the reason is worth stating rather than hiding.
No bait in our catalogue is labelled for voles. The refillable rodent station we review is a well-made enclosure, but its registration is a mouse product, and using it for voles in a lawn is off-label — which is a violation of federal law, not a technicality, as reading a pesticide label sets out. Penn State names zinc phosphide at “2 pounds per acre” placed directly into runways and anticoagulant baits at “10 pounds per acre” as the toxicants used against voles; those are agricultural rates and, in the case of zinc phosphide, frequently a restricted-use product.
Which is a question for a specific office rather than a general one. Pesticide registration and use in New Hampshire sits with the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets and Food, Division of Pesticide Control — that is who decides whether a restricted-use rodenticide has a homeowner route here, and it is not always the department you would guess. UNH Extension Home Lawn Care at University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension is the turf side of the same question, and the better first call: an extension programme will tell you what actually works locally before you find out what is merely legal. New Hampshire also carries its own restrictions on lawn chemicals generally — Anyone applying pesticides on someone else's property must hold a Commercial Applicator licence from the Division of Pesticide Control — which is a reminder that the label is the floor and the state sits on top of it.The live cage traps sold with “mole and vole” in the listing are for neither. The castor-oil granules are not what the extensions name. Penn State lists thiram and capsaicin as the repellent actives and then says “little data is available on the effectiveness of repellents.” Illinois allows that thiram “offer[s] short-term protection.” Castor oil appears in neither, and the ultrasonic devices sold alongside them have their own answer in do ultrasonic pest repellers work.
The things that work here are a mower, a rake, a bag of seed and a roll of hardware cloth.

They sit on that list alongside European chafer and Japanese beetle, which matters in spring because those three produce damage at completely different times and only one of them is finished by the time you see it.
The soil argument is local too. New Hampshire soils are Loamy glacial till across the uplands, draining Moderate to fast through the top foot, then stopped by the dense basal-till substratum the glacier compacted — so one square metre can be soggy in spring and drought-stressed in midsummer, and that decides how long you wait before walking a thawed lawn. Runway repair done on a soft surface prints the damage in deeper than the voles did, and on the slower-draining end of that range the wait is measured in days after the melt rather than hours.
Timing follows the local thaw rather than a date: last frost in New Hampshire runs Mid-May inland and at elevation, late April along the coast — which is a full month of growing season between Colebrook and Portsmouth. Assess once the surface is firm, and seed when the soil is working rather than on the day you find the damage.
Prevention is autumn work, so it belongs with the rest of the New Hampshire autumn list rather than in a spring panic:
- Seed August 15 to September 30 — earlier within that window the further north you are
- The last fertilizer of the year goes down before September 15 in the north, October 1 in the south
- Apply lime now if the test asked for it; the freeze-thaw cycle works it in over winter
The last mow on that list is the one that matters here. Penn State's three to six inches of ground cover is a number you hit in New Hampshire in autumn or you do not hit at all — a cool-season lawn will not give you another chance to lower it once the ground is frozen.

What damage actually matters?
The trees, not the turf. Voles gnaw bark at the ground line and can girdle a young tree completely, which kills it — Illinois describes seeing entire peach orchards ravaged as voles chewed the bark off at the base of the trunk. The lawn runways are cosmetic and temporary; a girdled trunk is permanent. If you only do one thing after finding runways, walk your young and newly planted trees and check the bark at soil level.
How do I know it was voles and not rabbits?
Measure the tooth marks. Penn State gives vole gnaw marks as about 1/8 inch wide, 3/8 inch long, and 1/16 inch or more deep, and that is what separates them from rabbit damage. Vole damage also sits at or just below the ground line, often under where the snow was, while rabbits work higher up the trunk where they could reach standing on snow.
Can I just kill them?
You can reduce them, but the arithmetic is against a control-only approach.
