Eight percent phosphorus in a 3 lb bag. Excellent for tulip bulbs and tomato transplants; the wrong product to put on a lawn, and in several states the exact input the law targets.
A good product on the wrong shelf for this audience, and worth listing precisely so the distinction is on record. Bone meal is a slow-release phosphorus source and the classic amendment worked into a planting hole for bulbs, tomatoes and peppers — root establishment is what the 8 does, and OMRI listing makes it usable in a certified organic garden. On turf it fails on three counts. Established lawns rarely need added phosphorus at all unless a soil test shows a deficiency; a 3 lb bag is a container-garden quantity that would disappear on a lawn; and phosphorus lawn fertilizer is restricted by statute in Washington, New Jersey, Michigan, New York, Virginia, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with county and municipal rules elsewhere. Buy it for the vegetable bed. Do not buy it to feed grass.
