Lawn Grubs: How and When to Kill Them
Most lawns never reach the grub treatment threshold, so count before you buy — and curative products only work from August through October. Guide for Rhode Island, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

The lawn looks shredded. Patches of turf flipped over, soil scattered, holes punched in the surface overnight.
That is almost never the grubs. That is what came to eat them. Ohio State notes that animal digging is often the first sign of grub activity, and that damage from birds, raccoons and skunks ripping at the turf to feed on the larvae underneath is frequently far more noticeable than the grub feeding itself.
Which is the whole problem with this pest. What you see is a symptom of a symptom, and the bag of grub killer at the garden centre is sold against the fear rather than the count. Is it even grubs?
Grub damage has one signature nothing else reproduces. The larvae sever the roots, so the turf loses its anchorage — Ohio State’s tug test is to grip the canopy with both hands and pull. Healthy turf resists; turf over grubs pulls back like a carpet. Everything else that browns a lawn keeps its roots and stays put.
What else does this, and how to tell
One more distinction worth making early, because it sends people to the wrong shelf: chinch bugs feed on the crown and stems at the surface, not the roots. A chinch bug lawn does not lift like carpet. Confusing the two means buying a surface insecticide for a soil pest, or the reverse, and watching neither work.
And if the tug test comes back negative, the turf is rooted and the damage is still spreading, the next list to work through is fungal. These are the diseases Rhode Island lawns actually get, which is a much shorter list than the national one:
- Red thread (the fine-fescue and ryegrass disease of a cool wet Rhode Island spring — it reads as low nitrogen more than as an infection)
- Dollar spot
- Brown patch (humid bay nights are what make it a Rhode Island problem rather than an occasional one)
- Snow mold, gray and pink
Every one of those keeps its roots. That is the whole reason the tug comes first — it splits the insect problems from the disease problems before you have spent anything.

Cut at the edge of the damaged area where live turf meets dead. The centre of a dead patch is where the grubs have already finished feeding and moved on — sampling there undercounts and tells you to do nothing when you should act.

Ohio State recommends sampling every 10 to 15 feet in a grid across a home lawn. Grub populations are patchy — one hot spot does not mean the property has a problem, and it is the reason blanket treatment is usually the wrong response.
The threshold, and why sources differ
Here the extension literature does not fully agree, and the honest thing is to show both numbers rather than pick the one that sells product.

The gap matters far less than the caveat both attach: turf health moves the threshold more than the count does. Ohio State notes 20 per square foot may go unnoticed in good turf, while stressed turf suffers at a fraction of that; Illinois puts it positively, that healthy lawns outpace the damage below roughly 12 because they grow roots faster than the larvae remove them.
One species breaks the scale entirely. Black turfgrass ataenius is much smaller, and Ohio State’s threshold for it is 30–80 per square foot in spring, 15–40 in summer. A high count of tiny grubs is being measured against the wrong number.
Is a grub even likely where you live?
This is the part a national article cannot answer, and it changes the odds before you cut a single flap of sod. White grubs are not equally important everywhere — in some states they are the number one turf pest, and in others they sit at the bottom of a list of five.

Nothing outranks grubs here, so in Rhode Island an irregular patch that lifts like carpet is the likeliest single explanation — which is a reason to count carefully, not a reason to skip counting. The rest of the state's list is what to check when the tug test comes back negative:

Preventive and curative are different products
Two product families, and buying the wrong one is where most of the grub money goes. A preventive active sits in the soil and kills larvae as they hatch, so it has to be down before hatch. A curative has no residual and only works on grubs already feeding near the surface. NC State’s warning about the second is worth quoting because it is absolute: pesticide applied at any other time will be ineffective.
There is also a third group that belongs to neither column and is the cheapest thing on the shelf — the pyrethroids, everything ending in -thrin, which bind to thatch and never reach a larva feeding inches down.

What does change by state is the calendar and the species driving it, which is the rest of this section.
Before you apply anything in Rhode Island
Applying a pesticide is the one job on a lawn with rules attached to it, and they are local. What is on the books here:
- Anyone applying pesticides on someone else's property for payment needs a Commercial Pesticide Applicator licence from DEM — including general-use products bought off the shelf
- Pesticide authority sits inside the environmental agency here, in DEM's Division of Agriculture and Forest Environment, rather than in a standalone department of agriculture
Not all of those touch grub work, but two kinds do. Anything that limits outdoor watering limits your ability to water an insecticide in, which is the step that decides whether it reaches the larvae at all — so check before you spread, not after. And anything that restricts which consumer products may be sold or applied can mean an active named in a national guide is not an option on your shelf. The product label is the legal document in every state; nothing here overrides it.
Your autumn window has a hard closing date
The reason the autumn window closes is mechanical rather than calendrical. Ohio State describes annual grubs ceasing to feed and burrowing deep into the soil once temperatures begin to drop. A grub that has gone down is out of reach of anything you apply to the surface — so the deadline is not a date on the label, it is your own first frost.

Read the middle row as the deadline. Once Rhode Island turf is cooling toward that date the larvae are heading down, and an application made after it is money spent on grubs you can no longer reach — you would be waiting for the April window instead, when they come back up larger and harder to kill. And read the bottom row as a warning about the watering-in step: where rainfall is unreliable, that water is coming from your hose on purpose, the same day.
What Rhode Island's guidance actually points at
The product category flagged for Rhode Island is Grub products chosen after identifying the species, because Oriental beetle is the default here rather than the exception — which lines up with grubs ranking high in the state's pest list. Chlorantraniliprole is the long-residual preventive in that group, and the one Ohio State allows to be applied earliest, from late May.
The window is crowded, so the order matters
The curative window is not empty. It lands on top of overseeding, autumn fertilization and the autumn broadleaf application — the busiest few weeks in the lawn calendar. Two sequencing rules follow from what grubs actually do:
- Treat before you seed. New seedlings put out exactly the shallow roots the larvae are feeding on, so seeding into a confirmed population above threshold is buying seed for the grubs. Deal with them, then seed the bare patches.
- Do not stack applications on the same weekend. Insecticide, herbicide and fertilizer each want to be watered in or left alone on their own schedule, and a lawn already thinned by grub feeding is the wrong place to be generous with chemistry.
Here is what Rhode Island's own autumn calendar already has booked into these weeks:
- September is the seeding month; URI's own sun-and-shade mixes are formulated for this state and sold locally
- The early September feeding is the year's most valuable, where a local ordinance allows it
- Resist over-seeding heavy — URI's own advice is that extra seed harms the lawn rather than thickening it
- Get the last application down well before an October 31 municipal cutoff if your town has one
If a grub count above threshold lands in the middle of that list, the grub treatment moves to the front of it — everything else is easier on a lawn whose roots are still attached.
What actually works, and when

The preventive — late May through mid-summer

View on AmazonChlorantraniliprole is the active both Ohio State and Penn State name for prevention, and Penn State puts its application at May or June. If you are reading this in spring with a grub history, this is the correct purchase and the long residual makes the timing forgiving.
If you are reading this in September with a live count, it is the wrong product — it kills grubs while they are young, and yours are not. What you need is a curative, and Penn State names the active: trichlorfon, most effective in late August or early September while the grubs are still small.
We now review one, and its registration confirms the point the paragraph above was making. The homeowner bag is branded around killing grubs in 24 hours; the name on its EPA registration is “Dylox 9.3% Insect Granules” — the professional product, in a consumer bag, on the same registration number. That is the only reliable way to identify a curative: ignore the front of the bag and read the active ingredient panel for the word trichlorfon. If it is not there, the product is not a curative, however the name reads.
Two instructions from that label are easy to miss and both matter. It says “Use this product only when grubs or other listed pests are present” — this is not a preventive and applying it on a schedule wastes it. And “Do not apply with hand-held or chest mounted spreader”, which rules out the small spreader most people own for a one-off job.

The same grub count does not do the same lasting damage everywhere, and the variable is the grass rather than the insect. Rhode Island lawns lean Kentucky Bluegrass, which spreads by runners — so a thinned patch closes itself once the feeding stops, and the repair is often just water and time. That is the cheap version of this problem.
And the soil decides how you water a curative treatment in. Rhode Island’s profile is Glacial till under about two-thirds of the state (Narragansett silt loam, the state soil, on the better ground); sandy outwash across South County and the coastal towns, drainage Moderate on the silt loam of the better ground, slow on the plain till that compacts and puddles, and fast on the coastal outwash sand that runs dry within days and lets nitrogen through to groundwater the state watches closely. On soil that drains that fast the risk is pushing the active straight past the root zone where the grubs are feeding — water it in, then stop.

Whether the repair and the treatment share a window in Rhode Island
Locally they may not, and it is worth checking before you buy seed with the insecticide. The seeding window in Rhode Island is September is URI's month for seeding, and it is short: the coast holds soil warmth into October, but the seedling still needs six weeks of root growth before the ground closes That overlaps the autumn curative window above, so on a cool-season lawn here the two jobs genuinely are one trip — treat, then seed into the same weeks.
How much repair you owe also depends on the grass rather than on the grub count. Kentucky Bluegrass spreads by runners or rhizomes, so it closes moderate gaps itself once the roots regrow — seed only where the turf is genuinely gone. And the regrowth has to come out of local ground: Acidic by default, as it is across glaciated New England; lime only against a test, because the fine fescues that suit this state tolerate lower pH than a bluegrass lawn wants URI Cooperative Extension Gardening Information and Soil Testing (GIST) — free pH only, with full nutrient panels referred out of state is where to find out what it is short of.
The honest summary
Grubs are real, and above the threshold they thin a lawn. But patchy populations, a threshold that moves with turf health, and a narrow window where treatment works at all add up to this: most people who buy grub control did not need it, and many who did applied it in the wrong month.
Illinois Extension compresses the whole article into six words: don’t treat for grubs that don’t exist. One square foot and two minutes tells you which lawn you have.
And one wrong reason to buy it: grub control will not remove moles — they eat earthworms.
And a second wrong reason to buy it: grub control will not reduce next summer’s Japanese beetles either. How do I know if I have lawn grubs?
Grab a handful of the turf at the edge of a damaged area and pull. If the roots have been chewed off, the turf lifts away like a piece of carpet with almost no resistance — Ohio State calls this the tug test, and no other lawn problem produces it. Then cut a one-square-foot flap of sod at the margin of the damage, peel it back and count the grubs in the soil underneath. Replace the flap and water it. The count, not the appearance of the lawn, is what decides whether you treat.
How many grubs per square foot before I should treat?
Around ten to twelve, and the two big extension sources genuinely differ: Ohio State puts the action point at more than 10 per square foot for annual species, Illinois Extension at about 12. Both add the same caveat, which matters more than the exact number — healthy turf tolerates far more grub feeding than stressed turf. Ohio State notes densities as high as 20 per square foot may cause no noticeable damage in a well-kept lawn, while a drought-stressed one suffers at half that.
When is the right time to treat for grubs?
For curative treatment, when the grubs are actually near the surface feeding: NC State puts that at August through October, and again April into early May, and is blunt that pesticide applied at any other time will be ineffective. Late summer and autumn beat spring because the grubs are still small, and Ohio State notes that smaller, younger grubs are more susceptible to insecticides than large ones. Preventive products are a different calendar entirely — late May to mid-August, before the eggs hatch.
What is the difference between preventive and curative grub control?
Preventive products go down before the eggs hatch and rely on residual activity in the soil; Ohio State gives roughly 8 weeks for imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, which means a mid-June application, and up to 12 weeks for clothianidin and chlorantraniliprole, applied no earlier than late May. Curative products are organophosphates applied onto grubs that are already there and feeding. Using a preventive on large autumn grubs is the single most common wasted application in lawn care — the product is not designed to kill them.
Should I apply grub preventer every year just in case?
No. Illinois Extension's instruction is a single sentence: don't treat for grubs that don't exist. Grub populations are patchy and they are not present in damaging numbers in most lawns in most years, so annual blanket preventive is money spent on an insecticide application your lawn did not need. Illinois also points out that grubs may only be in a small part of the lawn, so even a confirmed problem usually calls for treating in and around the affected area rather than the whole property.
