Dollar Spot Treatment: The Disease Nitrogen Fixes

Almost every fungal disease on this site gets worse when you feed the lawn.
Dollar spot is the exception, and it is a complete reversal rather than a nuance. Penn State’s finding is that dollar spot is more severe on turf that does not receive enough nitrogen, or when grass foliage grows slowly. Ohio State is blunter: proper nitrogen fertility will greatly reduce the occurrence and severity of dollar spot.
So the same bag of fertilizer that fuels brown patch suppresses this one. Getting the identification right is worth more than owning any product.

The one disease that means you are underfeeding
Most turf diseases are a story about excess — too much water, too much nitrogen, too much thatch. Dollar spot is a story about deficit, and the fungus is opportunistic about it. UGA describes stressed foliage as providing a good food source for the fungus.
The causal organism is Clarireedia jacksonii. Older references and product labels still call it Sclerotinia homoeocarpa; if you are cross-checking a fungicide label against a modern extension page, that name change is why the two may appear to disagree.
Conditions are narrow enough to be useful:

That last row explains a pattern people misread. Dollar spot often fades in the worst of summer heat and returns in September — not because anything was cured, but because the pathogen slowed above 90°F and then found its window again.
Confirming it on a single blade
The lawn-level view tells you what it probably is; a single leaf tells you what it is. This is a thirty-second check and it is worth doing before you buy anything.
At lawn level: many small, sharply bounded, straw-coloured spots. Sizes across the sources: Ohio State gives 2 to 3 inches in a lawn, Penn State 2 to 5 inches on home lawns and athletic fields, NC State up to 6 inches or more on higher-cut turf, and UGA a range from under ½ inch to more than 4 inches. The name comes from the silver-dollar size seen on closely mown golf greens — on a home lawn they are noticeably bigger than a coin, so do not rule the disease out because your spots are larger than the name implies.
On a single blade — the confirmation. Ohio State’s description is the one to work from: a straw-coloured or tan band with dark reddish-brown margins, and because the lesion is often narrower in width than the leaf, it takes on an hourglass shape. Penn State gives the same feature as light-tan lesions with reddish-brown borders. Nothing else in a home lawn produces that banded, pinched lesion.
Early morning, before the dew burns off. Ohio State: a fine, cobwebby white mycelium may be visible when heavy dew is present, and it disappears as the turf dries. Penn State places the same observation in early morning after rainy periods and on dew-covered grass. If you look at midday you will miss it — which is why so many people never see the diagnostic sign that is there at 6 AM.

What it is not
Three look-alikes, and the separations are clean.

The brown patch confusion is the expensive one. Both appear on the same grasses in the same months, and the correct response to each is the opposite of the correct response to the other. Count and measure before you feed: many small spots point at dollar spot and a feeding; a few large patches point at brown patch and restraint.
The nitrogen fix, and its timing
Here is the part that needs care, because this site tells you repeatedly not to fertilize a cool-season lawn in summer — and that advice stands. The resolution is timing, not a contradiction.
Penn State’s guidance is precise:
Late spring nitrogen fertilizer applications can help to minimize dollar spot severity, since foliar turfgrass growth will be stimulated during early summer when dollar spot infections begin. On athletic fields and lawns, fertilizer that releases nitrogen slowly over an extended period is usually more advantageous than quick-release products at this time of year.
Read the two halves. Late spring, so the growth is already underway when infections begin — this is not a July rescue feeding, which is the application our summer lawn care guide warns against for cool-season grass. UGA’s version for warm-season turf points the same way from a different angle: light and frequent nitrogen applications are recommended for disease management.
So the prescription is a modest, slow, late-spring feeding — not more nitrogen in total, but nitrogen present during the window when the fungus is looking for slow-growing foliage.

Dew is the other half
Fertility explains why the fungus took hold. Leaf wetness explains why it is spreading, and it is the cheaper of the two to fix.
NC State’s number is the one to hold: 10 to 12 continuous hours of leaf wetness. A summer night in a humid region already delivers a good share of that through dew alone. Evening irrigation adds the remaining hours, which is precisely how a lawn crosses the threshold that a dry-by-midnight lawn does not.
Three practices, each sourced and each free:
- Water between midnight and 6 AM (NC State). Both Ohio State and UGA independently warn against late afternoon and evening irrigation because it prolongs leaf wetness. Our watering guide has the scheduling side.
- Water deeply and infrequently. Penn State: apply more water less frequently, wetting the entire rootzone. Fewer wetting events means fewer wetness windows.
- Knock the dew off in the morning. NC State suggests mowing, dragging or whipping the turf; UGA mentions light irrigation or poling. On a home lawn, simply mowing in the morning does it — the same pass you were going to make anyway, timed to do a second job.
Ohio State adds the structural version: prune trees and shrubs so sunlight reaches the turf and air moves through it, so the grass dries faster. That is slow work, but it is the permanent fix for a corner of the lawn that stays wet every morning.
How hard the dew half fights you in Virginia is written in its climate data. Humidity reads: High in summer, and slower to dry in the Tidewater and along the rivers — which means summer nights here deliver most of NC State's 10-to-12-hour wetness threshold on their own, and your irrigation timing is the only wetness lever you actually control. Morning mowing earns its keep in this state. The rainfall pattern sets the season's shape — Fairly even (~43 in/year) with humid summers and thunderstorms; late-summer dry spells stress fescue — and the pressure winds down as nights cool toward the first frost, around Early October (mountains) to early November (Tidewater and Virginia Beach). A lawn still spotting close to that date is telling you the fertility half, not the dew half, is what never got fixed.

The optional feeding in your calendar is the one that matters here. The local window is Cool-season lawns take 2.0–3.5 lb of nitrogen a year across September, October, November, April and May at 0.5–0.7 lb a month; bermuda and zoysia are fed only between April 1 and August 15. Notice what that contains: a late-spring application described as optional, sitting alongside the autumn feedings that do most of the year's work.
For dollar spot specifically, that is not the optional one — it is Penn State's window almost exactly, the late-spring feeding that has foliage growing when early-summer infections begin. If Dollar spot has appeared in this lawn before, stop treating that application as discretionary and make it a slow-release one.
The disease you must not confuse it with here
The expensive mistake in this article is treating dollar spot as brown patch or the reverse, and in Virginia that risk is live rather than theoretical — brown patch is on the same local threat list, entered as Brown patch (tall fescue's summer nemesis here). And the local list does not treat the two as equals: brown patch is flagged as the headline killer for this state's dominant grass. So the default assumption for a damaged fescue lawn here should be brown patch, with dollar spot confirmed by the hourglass lesion before you feed anything.
Concretely: if it is brown patch, feeding makes it worse and our brown patch guide is the page you want. If the hourglass lesion is there, it is dollar spot and the lawn is hungry. Same grass, same month, opposite instruction.
The local summer calendar puts it on your list directly: Do not fertilize fescue between June and August — brown patch feeds on it Take that as the local scouting cue, and run the single-blade check before deciding which of the two you are looking at.
How much dew you are working against in Virginia
The 10-to-12-hour wetness requirement is easier or harder to avoid depending on your mornings. Locally: High in summer, and slower to dry in the Tidewater and along the rivers At that level dew is close to a nightly certainty through the season, so the wetness threshold is met most nights without any help from you. That makes irrigation timing the single highest-value change available — you cannot remove the dew, but you can stop adding hours to it.
Rainfall pattern here: Fairly even (~43 in/year) with humid summers and thunderstorms; late-summer dry spells stress fescue That last clause is the one to act on, and it connects the two halves of this disease. UGA's explanation for why underfed turf suffers more is that stressed foliage provides a good food source for the fungus — and a late-summer dry spell stresses the lawn exactly as effectively as a missed feeding does. So in this state the second half of the season carries a compounding risk: the same weeks that dry the lawn out are the weeks a hungry lawn is least able to outgrow damage.
And one structural factor, because Ohio State's permanent fix for a corner that stays wet is airflow and sunlight rather than any product. Local soil: Heavy red clay in the Piedmont (Northern VA/Richmond); limestone valleys in the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah; sandy Coastal Plain out to Hampton Roads/Tidewater, draining Slow on Piedmont clay, which sheds water in summer storms; fast on the Coastal Plain sands, which leach nitrogen. Free-draining soil is an advantage against this particular disease, because the surface dries early and the canopy with it. The corollary is that nutrients leave quickly too, which makes the underfed condition easier to fall into — so the fertility half deserves more attention here than the wetness half.
Before assuming your lawn is underfed, measure it — Virginia's land-grant lab is Virginia Tech Soil Testing Laboratory, and its report is what separates a real nitrogen gap from a watering or thatch problem wearing the same spots. Note what the state's own maintenance calendar already schedules: Do not fertilize fescue between June and August — brown patch feeds on it — a lawn following that line rarely gets hungry enough for this disease to matter.
Fungicides: last, and limited
And on one cool-season disease the published answer is no fungicide at all — red thread, which low nitrogen drives in the same spring this one does. The two are often the same lawn saying the same thing twice.
This is the section most articles on this disease lead with. It belongs at the end, and the sources say why.
The options for homeowners are genuinely narrow. UGA states that few effective fungicides are available for the general public. NC State’s product list marks most entries as not labeled for home lawn use. So a homeowner reaching for chemistry first finds a much shorter shelf than a golf course superintendent does.

Resistance is documented, not theoretical. Penn State notes that resistance to penetrant fungicides has developed in Clarireedia jacksonii, and recommends alternating modes of action, mixing contact and penetrant products, or using only contact fungicides. UGA’s version is to alternate fungicides from different chemical classes to limit the possibility of resistance. Repeating the same bottle every outbreak is how a product stops working.
But read that advice knowing who it was written for. The standard turf contact fungicide is chlorothalonil, and it is not available to you. We read the label — Quali-Pro Chlorothalonil 720 SFT, EPA Reg. No. 53883-310 — and it states: “Do not use on home lawns and turf sites associated with apartment buildings, daycare centers, playgrounds, playfields, recreational park athletic fields, athletic fields located on or next to schools… campgrounds, churches, and theme parks.” Its permitted sites are “sod farms; turf on golf courses, professional and collegiate athletic fields; and lawns around commercial and industrial buildings.”
A second label confirms it from the other direction, and this one is a product sold for lawns. Quali-Pro’s Strobe Pro G — azoxystrobin plus propiconazole, EPA Reg. No. 53883-440 — handles dollar spot preventively and then says what to do when the disease is already active: “For non-residential turf with active Dollar Spot, use the higher rate and apply a Quali-Pro Chlorothalonil product.” The registrant scoped that sentence to non-residential turf deliberately, because they know the curative route is closed on a home lawn.
So “mix a contact with a penetrant” is sound turf science aimed at a superintendent with a licence and a golf course. On a home lawn the contact half of that programme is off-label, and the honest homeowner version of resistance management is narrower: alternate between different penetrant classes — a DMI such as propiconazole and a QoI such as azoxystrobin are different groups — and lean harder on the cultural changes, because you do not have the third option the professionals have.
If the disease keeps expanding after fertility and irrigation have been corrected, a labelled homeowner fungicide is a reasonable next step — as a supplement to those changes, not a replacement for them.

The Virginia season, in dates
Dollar spot needs warm days, cool nights and dew — which brackets it between your two frost dates rather than into a month. In Virginia that runs from about Mid-May (mountains) to early April (Tidewater) to Early October (mountains) to early November (Tidewater and Virginia Beach), across USDA zones 5b to 8a. The long shoulder seasons at either end are when the dew sits longest, and they are the part people miss while watching midsummer.
One local overlap worth separating. The spring barrier application in Virginia falls around Early March (Hampton Roads/Tidewater) to late March/early April (Northern VA/Richmond), as soil reaches 55°F — and a weed-and-feed product puts that job and a nitrogen application on the same day. If your dollar spot is a nitrogen problem, a barrier product bought for crabgrass is not the feed that fixes it, whatever the bag suggests. The honest summary
Dollar spot is the disease that rewards diagnosis over shopping.
Count the damage: many small straw-coloured spots, not a few large patches. Then check one blade for the tan band with reddish-brown margins pinched narrower than the leaf — the hourglass. If it is there, you have the one common lawn disease that is telling you the lawn is underfed rather than overfed.
Fix it in that order. A modest slow-release feeding in late spring, so growth is underway when early-summer infections start. Irrigation moved to between midnight and 6 AM, and never in the evening. Mow in the morning to take the dew with you. Raise the cut. Deal with thatch over an inch.
Fungicide last, if at all — few effective products are sold to homeowners, resistance to the penetrants is already documented, and neither of those problems applies to feeding the lawn properly and watering it at the right hour.
