How to Get Rid of Nutsedge: One Pull Does Nothing
Nutsedge ignores ordinary weed killer because it is a sedge. UC IPM: one pull does nothing — but pulling every 2 to 3 weeks drains the tuber underneath it. Guide for Wyoming, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

If you have sprayed weed killer twice and one weed is still standing taller than the rest of your lawn days after mowing, you almost certainly have nutsedge — and the products in your shed were never going to work on it. Nutsedge is not a broadleaf weed and not a true grass. It is a sedge, a separate plant family, and it needs its own chemistry.
Confirm It Is Actually Nutsedge
Three checks, about twenty seconds. Getting this right is the whole article, because the wrong identification is why most people waste two products.
- Roll the stem between your fingers. Nutsedge stems are triangular — you can feel three distinct flat faces. Every true grass has a round or flattened stem. This single test is definitive.
- Watch the height after mowing. Nutsedge grows noticeably faster than turf, so it stands above the canopy two or three days after you cut.
- Look at the color and shine. The blades are a glossy, light yellow-green that reads brighter than surrounding grass, with a distinct crease down the center and a sharply pointed tip.
Yellow nutsedge is the species most homeowners meet; purple nutsedge is darker, more aggressive and more common in the Deep South. Green kyllinga looks similar but forms low dense mats rather than upright shoots — the same products control it. Why Your Weed Killer Did Nothing
Herbicide labels are organized around plant families, and sedges sit outside the two families that homeowner products target.
- Three-way broadleaf herbicides (2,4-D, dicamba, MCPP) work on plants with broad leaves and branching veins. Nutsedge has neither.
- Crabgrass and grassy-weed products (quinclorac and similar) are built for true grasses. Nutsedge is not one.
- Pre-emergent herbicide stops seeds as they germinate — which is why it works on crabgrass and annual bluegrass and not here. Nutsedge spreads primarily from tubers already in your soil, so a seed barrier misses the actual reproduction route.
What is left is a short list of sedge-specific chemistry. For a homeowner the two that matter are halosulfuron and sulfentrazone — the two University of Maryland Extension names for lawns, and the two you will actually find on a shelf. UC IPM’s list runs longer, adding trifloxysulfuron-sodium, mesotrione and sulfosulfuron, most of which are professional products. Bentazon is a fourth homeowner option with a real limitation, covered further down.
Read for the active ingredient rather than the marketing on the front of the bottle — “kills tough weeds” tells you nothing about whether it lists sedges. Treat while plants are youngJune, then late August into September. UW's own framing is useful: a slow-release application covers a 90 to 100 day growing season, which is roughly the entire Wyoming season
UC IPM gives the deadline rather than a height: apply before the fifth-leaf stage, when the plant is still building energy reserves by drawing energy from its leaves to the newly forming tubers. After that, translocation reverses and far less of what you spray reaches the tubers — which is why a late application looks like it worked and then does not.
Add a non-ionic surfactantSame application
Sedge blades are waxy and shed spray readily. Where the label calls for a surfactant, it is not optional — it is the difference between the product sitting on the leaf and being absorbed.
Spot-treat, don't blanket-spraySame application
Nutsedge grows in discrete clumps, so spot treatment costs less, keeps the product off healthy turf and works just as well. Confirm your grass species is listed on the label first.
Expect and plan the second pass3–6 weeks later
Dormant tubers sprout after the first treatment removes the plants above them. A follow-up application on the new shoots is the normal course of treatment, not a failure of the first one.
Fix the moisture problemThis month
Audit irrigation run times, check for a leaking head or a chronically wet low spot, and correct drainage. Without this, the tubers left in the soil simply repopulate the same patch next season.
Thicken the turf over itUW's numbers are the lowest of any state we cover, and deliberately so: 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year produces a very nice lawn in most of Wyoming, never more than 1 pound in a single application, and one to two applications a year is the manicured programme. For Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue specifically, UW suggests considering fertilizing once every one to three years. Products That Actually Work
Label safety for your lawn: Wyoming lawns are predominantly Kentucky Bluegrass. Halosulfuron is labeled for all the major US turf species including Kentucky Bluegrass, which makes it the safe default here. One important exclusion: Celsius WG below is a warm-season product and is NOT labeled for Kentucky Bluegrass — skip it on a cool-season lawn and use halosulfuron.

View on AmazonA word on what not to buy: any product marketed as killing “all weeds and grasses” is non-selective and will leave a dead patch in your lawn. And a standard three-way broadleaf herbicide, however many times you apply it, will not control this plant.
Off the lawn, though — in gravel, on a path, along a fence — the calculation changes, and one non-selective is better at sedge than its reputation suggests. NC State rates glufosinate “just as effective on nutsedges and most annual weeds” as glyphosate, and it works in days rather than weeks; glyphosate vs glufosinate covers where that trade holds and where it does not.

There is a non-chemical route, it genuinely works, and it fails for almost everyone who tries it — because it is a schedule rather than a task.
The usual advice is that pulling nutsedge is pointless, and one pull is. The tuber sends up a replacement and you are back where you started. But UC IPM publishes what that replacement costs the plant, and the numbers change the picture:
“Continually removing shoots eventually depletes the energy reserves in the tuber, because the nutsedge will have to use 60% of its reserves to develop the first plant and 20% for the second.”
Sixty per cent for the first regrowth. The tuber is a battery, and every shoot you take drains it. UC IPM does add the honest limit — “mature tubers can resprout more than 3 times” — so this is a campaign, not an afternoon.
What makes it work or fail is timing, and their instruction is specific:
“To limit tuber production, remove small nutsedge plants before they have 5 to 6 leaves; in summer this is about every 2 to 3 weeks. Up to this stage, the plant hasn’t formed new tubers yet.”
That is the whole trick. Pull inside the window and the plant spends reserves without replacing them. Pull after it and the plant has already banked new tubers, so you have traded a shoot for a larger reservoir. Weeding whenever you happen to notice it is therefore not a slower version of this method — it is the opposite of it.
And one thing that really does make it worse: never rotovate or till infested ground. UC IPM notes the majority of tubers sit in “the top 6 inches of soil” and survive “1 to 3 years” — exactly the depth a tiller reaches. Tilling does not remove tubers, it distributes them, turning one patch into a field.
How long that campaign runs is the part that changes where you live. Tubers start sprouting once soil holds above 43°F for yellow nutsedge and above 59°F for purple, so Wyoming's USDA 4a–5b range sets how many two-to-three-week cycles you are committing to before the ground cools again. Wyoming programs flag yellow nutsedge rather than purple, which is the more tractable species — the hand-removal route is a realistic standalone plan here if the patch is small and you keep to the schedule.Fix the Water, or It Comes Back
And sedge rarely arrives alone on wet ground. UF lists sedges and dollarweed together as indicators of moist soils — one water problem with two symptoms, and only one of them responds to the chemistry on this page.
Nutsedge is an indicator species. Extension guidance is consistent on this point: it favors soils that stay wetter than turf prefers. Treat the plant and ignore the cause, and the tubers in your soil will simply produce a new stand.
- Audit irrigation. Water deeply and infrequently rather than daily. A short daily cycle keeps the top inch of soil continuously moist, which is precisely the condition nutsedge exploits.
- Find the leak. A single misaligned or weeping sprinkler head explains a surprising share of isolated nutsedge patches.
- Correct low spots. Areas that pond after rain need grading or top-dressing, not more herbicide.
- Relieve compaction. Core aeration improves infiltration so water moves down through the profile instead of sitting at the surface.
- Never till infested soil. Tilling chops and distributes tubers, turning one patch into a field.
Why Wyoming Grows Nutsedge
Nutsedge is a wet-soil weed, and Wyoming supplies the moisture in its own way — which decides where your effort goes after the herbicide:
- Humidity: dry and relentlessly windy — Wyoming turf loses water to wind at a rate a humidity figure does not capture, and that is as true in January as in July, and rainfall Roughly 10 to 16 inches a year across most of the state, much of it as snow. A Wyoming lawn is an irrigated lawn or it is not a lawn.
- The soil underneath: Well-drained plains and rangeland soils (Forkwood loam, the state soil, is the representative one) in USDA 4a–5b — Fast on the well-drained plains soils and faster still on the thin ground at elevation, where wind removes what the soil does not; moderate in the valley alluvium, which holds a little longer but not by much.
- Your summer watering discipline, per local guidance: Once soils have warmed, switch to slow-release or organic — one slow-release application covers most of the remaining season — the single habit that decides whether the tubers repopulate the same patch.
- Repairing the thin spots it leaves: your establishment window is Late August into early September where the season allows it; at elevation the window is narrow enough that spring seeding with irrigation is often the more realistic plan — closed turf is the only permanent nutsedge control.

What to Expect
Nutsedge is controllable but rarely a one-application job, and honest expectations prevent people from concluding the product failed:
- 2–3 weeks — visible yellowing and decline of treated shoots.
- 3–6 weeks — new shoots appear from dormant tubers; this is expected. Apply the follow-up.
- One full season — a well-treated patch with corrected drainage usually stops recurring, though tubers can persist in soil for years, so keep scouting the same spot each summer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kills nutsedge but not grass?
Halosulfuron and sulfentrazone are the two you will most easily find, and they work. They are not the only ones — UF/IFAS lists selective sedge control with imazaquin (Image Kills Nutsedge), penoxsulam or sulfentrazone, and UC IPM adds trifloxysulfuron, mesotrione and sulfosulfuron on the professional side. Standard three-way broadleaf herbicides and crabgrass products have essentially no effect on it, because nutsedge is a sedge rather than a broadleaf weed or a true grass. Look for halosulfuron on the label, not a brand promise.
Why does nutsedge keep coming back after I pull it?
Because pulling removes the shoot and leaves the tuber, and the tuber simply sends up another one. UC IPM notes that mature tubers can resprout more than 3 times, and that the majority of tubers can be found in the top 6 inches of soil and can survive for 1 to 3 years. So one pull genuinely achieves nothing. What it does not do is make things worse — that is tilling, which chops and distributes tubers across a wider area. Can I get rid of nutsedge without herbicide?
Yes, if you are relentless about it, and UC IPM publishes the arithmetic that makes it work. Their instruction is to remove small nutsedge plants before they have 5 to 6 leaves, which in summer is about every 2 to 3 weeks, because up to this stage the plant hasn't formed new tubers yet. Each removal forces the tuber to spend reserves on a replacement shoot instead of on new tubers: the nutsedge will have to use 60% of its reserves to develop the first plant and 20% for the second. Keep that up and the tuber runs out. The catch is the schedule — miss the window and the plant builds new tubers rather than draining the old one, so an occasional weeding session accomplishes nothing at all.
Is nutsedge a sign of a lawn problem?
Almost always yes: it signals excess soil moisture. Chronic overwatering, poor drainage, a low spot that stays saturated or a leaking irrigation head all favor nutsedge over turf. If you treat the plant without fixing the water, it returns.
How long does it take to kill nutsedge?
Expect two to three weeks for visible decline after a halosulfuron application, and plan on a second pass three to six weeks later as dormant tubers sprout. That follow-up is normal, not a sign the first treatment failed.
Can I use Roundup on nutsedge in my lawn?
Only if you intend to kill the surrounding grass too. Glyphosate is non-selective, so on a lawn it leaves a dead patch that weeds recolonize. Reserve it for hardscape cracks or an area you plan to fully replant, and use a sedge-specific selective product in turf.
