Glyphosate vs Glufosinate: The Roots Are the Difference

Glufosinate is faster and matches glyphosate on annuals and nutsedge. NC State: it does not translocate throughout the plant — so perennials come back.

Somebody tells you glufosinate is the Roundup alternative. Reasonable-sounding: it is non-selective, it is widely sold, and it works noticeably faster.

Then you spray a patch of bermudagrass with it, watch the whole thing go brown in three days, and watch it come back four weeks later.

Nothing failed. The two herbicides are shaped differently, and the difference is whether anything reaches the roots.

One Difference Explains the Rest

NC State Extension’s landscape weed publication, by Joe Neal and Andrew Senesac, describes glufosinate in four words that carry the whole article:

“locally systemic — meaning it moves within treated foliage but does not translocate throughout the plant.”

And they add the soil half: glufosinate “has little or no potential for root uptake when applied to the soil.”

Glyphosate is the opposite by design. It moves out of the treated leaf, through the plant, and into the root system and the underground structures a perennial regrows from. That single property is why it is the standard tool for killing a lawn before reseeding and for finishing off kudzu.

So the question is never which is stronger. It is whether the plant you are looking at keeps anything underground.

Where Glufosinate Is an Even Trade

This is the part that gets lost when the comparison is written as a ranking. NC State’s sentence has two halves and most summaries quote only the first:

“Finale typically does not control perennial weeds (such as: bindweed, goldenrod, bermudagrass, and mugwort) as well as glyphosate. Yet, it is just as effective on nutsedges and most annual weeds.

Nutsedge is worth pausing on, because sedges are the family that defeats most homeowner chemistry — our own nutsedge guide exists because nothing in a typical shed touches them. On a gravel drive or a fence line where the problem is annual weeds and sedge rather than an established perennial, glufosinate is not a compromise. It is the same result, faster.

Speed Is Not the Same as Finishing the Job

The glufosinate label we read commits to a timeframe most herbicides avoid:

“Visual effects and control from application … occur within 2 to 4 days after application under good growing conditions.”

Two to four days is fast enough to feel like proof. It is not proof, and the label is honest about why:

“Regrowth may occur due to the weed stage of growth at application, low use rate, or environmental conditions. Repeat treatments may be necessary to control plants generating from underground parts or seed.”

Plants generating from underground parts. That is the sentence to carry away — the manufacturer saying, on the accepted label, that what is below ground may not be finished. The speed and the limitation are the same fact seen twice: it works fast because it damages the tissue it lands on, and it does not finish perennials for the same reason.

Glyphosate reads as disappointing for the first week and better in the third. If you judge either product by how brown things look on day four, you will choose the wrong one for a perennial every time.

The Size Threshold That Applies To Every Contact Product

Glufosinate is not the only contact non-selective on the shelf, and the whole family shares one limitation that is worth stating as a number. Clemson, writing about the organic contact options — “pelargonic acid”, “acetic acid” and “plant oils” — calls them “contact herbicides recommended for small emerging weeds” and puts a measurement on “small”: apply “when the weeds are young and small, less than 2 inches tall”, and “within one to two weeks of weed emergence.”

Under two inches. That is the honest operating range of anything that kills only what it wets, and glufosinate sits closer to that family than to glyphosate however much stronger it is. Clemson’s warning about going past it applies equally: “if weeds are allowed to grow for too long, herbicides may not control them completely, leaving behind plant parts in the soil that may regrow.”

Which is why the perennial case is the one that separates the two chemistries rather than the speed. Clemson: “perennial weeds reproduce by seed and underground perennial parts that include tubers, rhizomes, or bulbs”, and their advice for those is not a stronger spray but “remove the underground parts of perennial weeds as much as possible.” A contact product on a rhizome is a haircut.

Neither One Belongs on a Lawn

Both are non-selective, and the glufosinate label states it without hedging: the product “is nonselective and will injure or kill all green vegetation contacted by the spray.” Your grass is green vegetation.

There is exactly one turf use on the label we read, and it is narrow enough that quoting it loosely would mislead: well-established ornamental dormant hybrid or common bermudagrass, applied before spring green-up, with the label warning of severe turfgrass injury or delayed green-up otherwise. Dormant bermuda in winter is not “you can use it on bermuda lawns”.

One prohibition that is not in any product description

The glufosinate label carries a county-level ban printed on the container:

“In the State of New York Only: Not For Use in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.”

That is Long Island, and it is a prohibition rather than a rate limit. It is the kind of restriction that exists only on the label — we record every one we find in the state product restrictions tool, because no retail listing carries them.

Which One to Buy

The Honest Summary

Two questions, and they settle it without any chemistry:

  1. Does the plant keep something underground — rhizomes, tubers, a taproot? Glyphosate. Glufosinate will brown it and it will return.
  2. Is it an annual, or sedge, and do you want it gone this week? Glufosinate is an even trade and considerably faster.

And the third thing, which is not a question: neither belongs anywhere near a lawn you intend to keep. Read the panel, and if the word selective is absent, the grass dies too.

Judging either by how fast the leaves brown is judging the wrong thing.

Does glufosinate kill the roots?

Resistance is mostly an agricultural problem rather than a home one, but the same logic applies at any scale — if a patch has survived repeated glyphosate applications, reaching for more glyphosate is the least likely thing to work, and a different group is a more sensible next step than a higher rate.
