Fluazifop-P-butyl

Aryloxyphenoxypropionate (ACCase inhibitor, Group 1)

A grass-selective herbicide that blocks an enzyme only grasses depend on, which is what lets it kill a grass inside a broadleaf planting.

What it does

Kills grasses — including bermudagrass, which is why it is the tank-mix partner in every published programme for suppressing bermuda in a tall fescue lawn, and why it works on grass coming up through ornamental beds.

What it does not do

It does not distinguish between the grass you want and the grass you do not, except by rate and by species tolerance printed on the label. It is also slow: complete bermudagrass control is described on one label we read as taking one to two growing seasons.

The label constraint people miss

Species tolerance is the whole game. One label we read is not registered for Kentucky bluegrass at all, and its bermudagrass sections carry a footnote reading 'not applicable in California'. Match your grass and your state to the label before buying.
