Weeds in Gravel and Driveways: Why They Keep Coming Back
Every ready-to-use bottle for hardscape is a contact killer. NC State: they knock down top growth only, and none have residual activity in soil.

If you have sprayed your gravel drive three times this season and the same weeds are back, the product did not fail. It was never designed to kill the plant.
NC State Extension puts the whole hardscape aisle into one group and says what it does:
Contact herbicides “will only knock down the top growth of perennial weeds.”
The Distinction That Decides Everything
Two words, and once you have them the whole aisle sorts itself.
Contact. The chemical damages the tissue it lands on and goes no further. NC State’s description of glufosinate is the cleanest statement of the limit: it “moves within treated foliage but does not translocate throughout the plant” and “does not translocate to the roots of treated plants.”
Systemic. The chemical is absorbed and carried through the plant, including down to roots and crown. That is what kills a perennial instead of pruning it.
Now match that to what is growing:

That last row is also the line between this page and acreage-scale work: a hardscape product leaves nothing in the soil, while the fence-line products sold for rural lots are chosen precisely because they do — bare ground herbicide covers that trade and the tree roots it reaches. That row deserves attention because it surprises people. NC State: “None of these products have residual activity (i.e.: no root uptake and no preemergence weed control) in soils.” Nothing you spray on gravel stops the next generation. You are treating what is there, never what is coming.
So the honest diagnosis for the three-sprays-a-season cycle is one of two things: you are treating perennials with a contact product, or you are treating a seedbank that keeps producing. Usually both.
What Is Actually In Those Bottles
NC State names the contact actives, and it is worth seeing them in one list because the marketing makes them look like different categories:
- Diquat (Reward)
- Pelargonic acid (Scythe)
- Glufosinate (Finale) — locally systemic, still not to the roots
- Ammonium nonanoate (Axxe)
- Fatty acids, acetic acid, botanical oils
Every one of those is a burndown. The “natural” ones and the synthetic ones are in the same functional group — vinegar and diquat differ in a great many ways, and not in whether they reach the root.

When You Need The Systemic
Which of the products on the shelf does that, and which merely looks like it does, is in best grass and weed killer — the short version being that a contact product on a perennial takes the top off and leaves the roots.
For the clumps that return every year in the same spot — established perennial grasses, bindweed, dock, brambles at a fence line — a contact spray is a haircut.
The widely available systemic for a homeowner is glyphosate, and its relevance here is mechanical rather than promotional: it is translocated, so it reaches the root system that contact products cannot.

One warning first, and it is specific to exactly this page’s subject. Penn State, writing about non-crop and farmstead areas: “Most of these products should not be used on impervious surfaces such as paved or highly compacted areas. Runoff from treated impervious surfaces or transport of treated soils by erosion can severely injure or kill susceptible non-target plants.”
Read that against what a gravel drive actually is. It is the most compacted ground on the property, it sheds water rather than absorbing it, and it usually slopes toward something — a lawn edge, a bed, a ditch. So a soil-residual product that behaves predictably in a fencerow can leave a drive and end up under a tree you were not treating. That is the mechanism behind most “why did the hedge die” stories that follow a bare-ground application, and it is an argument for a foliar product on a drive even where a residual would be cheaper.
Penn State also states the practical limitation of the common actives plainly: “typical herbicides such as glyphosate, 2,4-D, dicamba, and Crossbow can be used but will likely need to be tank-mixed with each other to provide broad-spectrum control.” One bottle rarely covers what grows in gravel — which is a reason to identify what is actually there rather than buying the strongest thing on the shelf.

Everything above treats what is growing. One chemistry prevents regrowth for months by staying in the soil — and that property is both the reason to use it and the reason to be careful:

Where it works: “Flame weeding may be practical for cracks in driveways, between pavers, or in gravel mulch.” And “heat can kill seedling broadleaf weeds.”
Where it does not: “Flame weeding will provide only foliar damage to grasses, perennial sedges and perennial broadleaf weeds. These types of weeds re-grow rapidly following treatment.”
So it obeys exactly the same contact-versus-systemic rule as the sprays — heat is a contact method.
And one hard safety limit: do not use it “where flammable mulching materials are present.” That rules out bark, straw and any dry vegetation at the gravel edge. On a hot dry day next to a fence, this is not a marginal caution.
One cheap addition that matters most here
On a contact product, coverage is the treatment — NC State’s whole point is that untouched tissue is untreated tissue. Which makes an invisible miss the most expensive mistake on a hardscape job:

When the thing in the gravel is woody
A seedling tree, a bramble or a vine coming through hardscape is a different job from a summer annual, because a contact burndown only removes what it touches. Two we cover in full: poison ivy, where the risk of pulling it out by hand is the reason to spray instead, and kudzu, where the regrowth organ is a crown at the soil surface you can physically remove.
Gravel Is A Base Problem Too
Both NC State and Clemson frame landscape weed control as an integrated job rather than a spraying job, and on gravel that framing is the difference between a season of work and a permanent improvement.
What is actually happening in a weedy gravel drive:
- Fines have accumulated. Dust, organic debris and broken-down stone fill the voids and become a seedbed. New gravel does not grow weeds; ten-year-old gravel does.
- The seedbank is topped up from the edges. Weeds in the adjacent lawn, bed or verge set seed and it lands on the gravel. No spray prevents that.
- There may be no barrier, or the barrier has failed and roots are through it.

The Honest Summary
Match the product to the plant, not to the surface. Annuals and seedlings: a burndown, and the speed is a genuine advantage. Established perennials: systemic, or accept you are mowing them chemically.
Stop expecting prevention from a bottle. NC State’s line covers the whole category — no residual activity in soils — so every one of these products treats today and nothing else.
And treat the gravel as a surface with a seedbed in it, because that is what it has become. The fines are the problem the spray cannot reach.

Why do weeds keep coming back in my gravel driveway?
Because almost every ready-to-use bottle sold for hardscape is a contact herbicide, and a contact herbicide does not kill the plant. Will vinegar or an organic weed killer work on gravel?
On young seedlings yes, on established perennials no — and for the same reason as every other contact product. NC State lists fatty acids, acetic acid and botanical oils in the same group as diquat and pelargonic acid: they deliver foliar damage and knock down top growth. An acetic-acid or essential-oil spray will brown a weed within hours, which looks like success, and the plant will return from its roots. That is not a criticism of the category — a fast burndown on seedlings in a gravel path is a legitimate job and these products do it without a systemic residue. It is only a problem when it is bought expecting permanence.
Does flame weeding work on driveway weeds?
In the right places, on the right weeds. NC State notes flame weeding may be practical for cracks in driveways, between pavers, or in gravel mulch, and that heat can kill seedling broadleaf weeds. The limitation is the same pattern again: flame weeding will provide only foliar damage to grasses, perennial sedges and perennial broadleaf weeds, and these types of weeds re-grow rapidly following treatment. One safety restriction is explicit — do not use it where flammable mulching materials are present, which rules out bark and straw mulch and any dry vegetation at the edge of the gravel.
Is glyphosate the only thing that kills gravel weeds permanently?
It is the widely available systemic option for a homeowner, which is why it keeps appearing in this context, and it is the reason a systemic works where a burndown does not: it is carried to the roots. Nothing about it is permanent in the sense people mean, though. Glyphosate does not stop new seeds germinating — NC State's point that these products have no pre-emergence control applies to it as well — so the gravel will produce a new flush from the seedbank regardless. Can herbicide sprayed on a driveway damage nearby plants?
