When to Weed and Feed: Two Bags Often Beat One
Weed and feed does two jobs on two different calendars, so one bag rarely times both right. The month it works, and the lawns the label forbids. Guide for Minnesota, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

The pitch is almost irresistible: one bag, one pass, weeds dead and lawn fed. Millions of Americans buy it every spring, and the products genuinely work at what they claim.
The catch is not the chemistry. It is the calendar. Feeding a lawn and killing its weeds are two jobs with two different correct months, and a combined bag forces you to do both on one date. Whether that compromise is acceptable depends entirely on where you live — and in most of the country, on one specific month. What’s Actually in the Bag
Two unrelated products sharing a granule. Reading the label in these terms makes every decision below obvious.

Read those two right-hand cells again. One wants water, the other forbids it. That is not a flaw in one brand’s formulation — it is the fundamental tension in every combined product, and University of Illinois Extension names it directly: fertilizers need watering in for maximum effect, while many herbicides need to remain on the leaves.
So every application of weed and feed compromises at least one half. You either water it in and weaken the herbicide, or keep it dry and leave the fertilizer sitting on the surface.
There Are Two Different Products, and They Are Opposites
This is where most of the wasted money in this category goes. “Weed and feed” is not one product. There are two families, built on different chemistry for different grasses, and their instructions are the reverse of each other.

The reason for the reversal is where each herbicide enters the plant. The 2,4-D group is absorbed through leaves, so washing it off defeats it. Atrazine is absorbed substantially through roots, so it has to be moved into the soil to work at all.
Which means: if you apply the Southern bag the way you learned to apply the standard one — damp grass, no watering — you have wasted it. And the reverse is equally true. The two bags look almost identical on the shelf and want opposite treatment.
One more thing about the Southern bag: atrazine is a recognised groundwater contaminant. It carries setbacks near water bodies, extra restrictions on sandy soils, and it is not sold in every state — retailers list it as available in select states only. That is not a reason to avoid it on a St. Augustine lawn, where it is the correct choice. It is a reason to read the label rather than assume.
The Timing Conflict Is the Whole Story
The herbicide half can only work on weeds that are visibly, actively growing — small and green, in mild weather. That fixes the application date to spring or early autumn.
The feeding half should land whenever your grass is building roots. For cool-season lawns, extension services are close to unanimous that this is autumn, not spring: heavy spring nitrogen produces soft top growth, more disease and more mowing, at the expense of the root system.
Those two requirements point at different months. Illinois Extension puts the mismatch plainly — a crabgrass preventer belongs early in spring while the fertilizer belongs after the natural spring flush, and most lawn fertilizer should go down in autumn. A single bag cannot be in two months at once.
Here is what that looks like in Minnesota, using this state's researched windows. Broadleaf weeds are sprayable Late May–June and September; autumn is the stronger window for perennial broadleaf weeds. The lawn should be fed The University of Minnesota scales nitrogen by maintenance level AND soil organic matter: a low-maintenance unwatered lawn takes a single September application of 0.5–1 lb, while a watered lawn with clippings removed takes four — August, September, early October and May–June — and no single application should exceed 1 lb per 1,000 sq ft. That is the honest answer to “when should I apply weed and feed”: for most lawns, there is no single date that is correct for both halves.
It Does Not Kill Crabgrass
This deserves its own section because it is the number one reason people conclude weed and feed “did not work.”
2,4-D, MCPP and dicamba are broadleaf herbicides. They kill plants with wide leaves — dandelion, clover, plantain, chickweed, henbit, ground ivy. Crabgrass is a grass. Those active ingredients do not control it, and no amount of extra product will change that.
The Southern atrazine bag is a partial exception worth stating precisely: atrazine is soil-active and does suppress some grassy weeds, annual bluegrass in particular. But it is still not a crabgrass product, and buying it to solve a crabgrass problem is the same mistake with a different bag.
Crabgrass is handled two other ways entirely:

Crabgrass is documented as a high-risk weed in every single state we cover — all ten of them. So the most common lawn weed in America is the one this category cannot touch. Neither can it touch goosegrass, dallisgrass, or nutsedge, which is not even a grass.
Read the Grass List Before the Weed List
The standard bag’s label prohibits several lawn types outright, because the herbicides injure them:
- Floratam St. Augustine
- Carpetgrass
- Dichondra
- Lippia
- Creeping bentgrass
St. Augustine is the dominant lawn grass across Florida and much of the Gulf Coast, which makes this the most expensive available mistake in the category: a homeowner buys the standard bag, spreads it, and damages the lawn they were trying to improve. Those lawns need the atrazine-based Southern bag instead, applied the opposite way.
But “Southern” does not mean “anywhere warm.” The Southern bag’s grass list is exclusive too, and it excludes Bermuda — the dominant lawn grass across Georgia, Arizona and much of Texas. So a Bermuda lawn in Atlanta needs the standard bag, and a St. Augustine lawn forty miles south of it needs the other one. There is no bag that covers both.

Weed and Feed Timing in Minnesota
The decision is entirely local, because both halves of the bag are on local schedules. These are the researched windows for a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn in USDA zones 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a — printed verbatim so you can see the gap rather than take our word for it.

- Your grass decides whether you can use it at all. Minnesota lawns are mostly Kentucky Bluegrass, with Fine Fescue (shade and low-input), Perennial Ryegrass, Turf-type Tall Fescue (southern counties) also common. Local lawns run to bahiagrass and the cool-season grasses, which the atrazine Southern bag injures — so the standard 2,4-D bag is the compatible one here, applied to damp foliage and then kept dry. That makes timing, not compatibility, the deciding question. If there is bermuda in the mix, note that bermuda itself is on the atrazine bag's permitted list; it is the grasses beside it that rule the bag out.
- Your main feeding is in autumn, and your weed window is in spring. Spring nitrogen bought only to carry herbicide costs roots. Spray then, feed in autumn. Locally that reads: Mid-May, as soil warms — the season opens later here than anywhere else we cover
- Heat closes the herbicide window early. Local summers run Moderate, with a short humid July and August and cold dry winters with rainfall Drier than the Great Lakes states (~25–32 in/year, less in the west) with prolonged winter snow cover across most of the state — and three-way herbicides carry temperature ceilings because stressed turf is injured by them. The window above is not a suggestion; it closes.
- The weeds this bag will actually kill here: Dandelion; Creeping charlie (ground ivy).
- The weeds it will not touch here: Crabgrass — these need a pre-emergent or a different post-emergent chemistry, and no weed-and-feed bag will help.
- Local rule: Minnesota wrote the first phosphorus lawn fertilizer law in the country: enacted from 2002, in force from 2004 in the seven-county Twin Cities metro and from 2005 in the other 80 counties. Phosphorus may not be used on lawns or turf unless a soil or tissue test from within the last three years shows the available phosphorus is insufficient
- Local rule: The restriction is two-tier: phosphorus lawn fertilizer is prohibited outright in the seven-county metro, and limited to products at or below 3% P2O5 in the remaining counties
- Local rule: Exceptions are narrow — golf courses applying through trained staff, and farms growing sod for sale
- A restriction on either half closes the whole bag. This is the part people miss: because the product is one granule, a fertilizer blackout stops you applying it even when the weeds are perfectly sprayable that week — and an atrazine setback near water stops the Southern bag even when the lawn is genuinely due to be fed. Two separate products can each be used on the days they are actually allowed.
Which bag each Minnesota grass takes
The two labels are mutually exclusive, so within one state different lawns need different bags. This is every grass grown here, checked against both labels:

Your soil changes what the fertilizer half does
Deep prairie mollisols across the south and west; sandy outwash through the central counties; heavy Red River valley clay in the northwest. Drainage reads: Slow across the prairie mollisols and the Red River valley, where meltwater sits into spring; fast on the sandy Anoka plain. Soil pH here is Alkaline — the University of Minnesota notes soil pH here tends to run above 7 with high buffering capacity, so it resists being changed and acidifying fertilizers can actually help.
That matters more than usual with a combined bag. Ground this free-draining pushes nitrogen past the root zone quickly, so a single 28% nitrogen application delivers a flush and then runs out — while the herbicide half, which you must not water in, sits on the surface waiting. Split feedings suit this soil, and a combined product is by definition a single feeding. And because these soils run alkaline, pale turf here is more often locked-up iron than missing nitrogen — so the nitrogen in a weed-and-feed bag may not be the colour fix you were buying it for.
The frost dates close both windows
First frost: Early September (northern counties and the Iron Range) to early October (Twin Cities metro). Last frost: Late May (north) to early May (Twin Cities and the south). Turf here still grows past the first of those dates — which is why autumn is both the better feeding and the stronger weed window. Local rainfall: Drier than the Great Lakes states (~25–32 in/year, less in the west) with prolonged winter snow cover across most of the state — and an unwatered herbicide granule is at the mercy of it.
Heavy spring nitrogen has a local cost
Pushing 28% nitrogen into a lawn purely to get herbicide on the ground is not a neutral act. The diseases documented in Minnesota are Typhula blight (grey snow mold, after months of snow cover); Microdochium patch (pink snow mold); Necrotic ring spot (Kentucky Bluegrass, worst on sod); Dollar spot — and soft, fast growth from an off-schedule feeding is what several of them wait for. Local pests to keep in view: White grubs; Voles tunnelling under long-lasting snow cover; Sod webworms.
The product categories that genuinely suit Minnesota conditions are Zero-phosphorus fertilizer (required by law; the metro allows no exception without a test); Slow-release nitrogen for the leaching central sands; Snow mold preventive fungicides — Minnesota has the longest snow cover we cover; Fine fescue seed for shade and genuinely low-input lawns; Mulching mower blades; returning clippings cuts the annual nitrogen need by about 1 lb — worth comparing against what a single combined bag actually delivers, since not one of those categories is "fertilizer with herbicide mixed in."
The seasonal jobs this sits between in Minnesota:
- Spring: Keep the lawn at 3 inches or higher — the University of Minnesota does not lower it seasonally
- Spring: Pre-emergent in mid-May, once soil has actually warmed
- Spring: Rake out snow mold matting rather than reseeding immediately; most of it recovers
- Spring: A low-maintenance lawn gets no spring feeding at all under the UMN programme
- Summer: May–June is the only warm-season feeding slot, and only on lawns that are watered
- Summer: No single application over 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft
- Summer: Water 1 inch a week or allow dormancy; the central sands dry out first
- Summer: Return the clippings — UMN's table drops the annual nitrogen requirement by a full pound when you do
- Fall: September is the one feeding every maintenance level receives, from lowest to highest
- Fall: Seed or sod mid-August into early September — this window closes early
- Fall: September is also the strongest month for perennial broadleaf weeds
- Fall: Phosphorus only with a soil or tissue test from the last three years (state law)
- Winter: Expect Typhula blight where snow lies longest — this is the state for it
- Winter: Stay off frozen and snow-covered turf
- Winter: Watch for vole runways as the snow finally melts
- Winter: Plan next year from the organic-matter column of the UMN table, not from a generic rate
The Four Conditions That Make It the Right Buy
Weed and feed is not a bad product. It is a specific tool with a narrow window, and it is genuinely the efficient choice when all four of these are true:
- Broadleaf weeds are spread throughout the lawn, not clustered in a few patches. Scattered weeds are cheaper and greener to spot-treat.
- The weeds are the kind it controls — dandelion, clover, plantain, chickweed, henbit, ground ivy. Not crabgrass.
- Your lawn is genuinely due to be fed in that same window, by your region’s feeding calendar rather than by habit.
- Your grass is not on the prohibited list, and you can keep the spreader outside the dripline of trees and shrubs.
Miss any one of those and the combined bag is doing at least one job at the wrong time, in the wrong place, or to no effect.

The Honest Summary
Weed and feed sells on convenience, and convenience is a real benefit — a single pass across a weedy lawn that also needs feeding is a genuinely good afternoon’s work.
What it cannot do is make two calendars into one. In most of the country the month your lawn wants feeding and the month your weeds are sprayable are different months, and the bag has no way to resolve that. When they happen to line up, buy it. When they do not, buy the fertilizer your lawn wants on its own date and put herbicide only where the weeds actually are.
If the weeds you are looking at have wide leaves and a taproot, start with how to kill dandelions without killing grass. If they have narrow blades, you are in crabgrass territory and no weed-and-feed bag is going to help.

Apply it when broadleaf weeds are small and actively growing and your lawn is genuinely due to be fed in that same window — not automatically in spring. Does weed and feed kill crabgrass?
No. Standard weed and feed uses a three-way broadleaf herbicide — 2,4-D, mecoprop (MCPP) and dicamba — which controls dandelion, clover, plantain and similar broadleaf weeds. Crabgrass is a grass, and those active ingredients do not control it. Is weed and feed better than buying fertilizer and weed killer separately?
Usually no, for two reasons. First, the timing: the best month to feed and the best month to control weeds rarely coincide, so a combined bag forces one of the two jobs into the wrong month. Second, the coverage: weed and feed broadcasts herbicide across the entire lawn even where there are no weeds, while separate products let you feed everything and spot-treat only the weeds. Separate products cost slightly more effort and considerably less herbicide.
Should you water in weed and feed?
It depends which bag you bought, and the two are opposites. A standard weed and feed built on 2,4-D, mecoprop and dicamba must stick to damp weed leaves, so you apply it to dew-wet foliage and then keep the lawn dry for 24 to 48 hours. The Southern formulation built on atrazine is the reverse: apply it to a dry lawn and water it in immediately, because atrazine is absorbed largely through roots rather than leaves. Using one bag's routine on the other wastes the application, and the bags look nearly identical on the shelf.
Can you use weed and feed on St. Augustine grass?
Not the standard bag. Its label prohibits Floratam St. Augustine, along with carpetgrass, dichondra, lippia and creeping bentgrass, because 2,4-D and dicamba injure them. St. Augustine, centipede, zoysia and carpetgrass lawns need the atrazine-based Southern formulation instead — and that one must be watered in immediately rather than left dry. Note the reverse restriction as well: the Southern bag injures Bermuda, bahiagrass and cool-season grasses, so there is no single bag that covers both families. How long after weed and feed can you mow?
Wait two to three days, and do not mow immediately before applying either. The herbicide needs leaf surface to be absorbed through, so removing the weed's foliage right before or right after the application throws away most of the effect. Leaving the clippings on the lawn after that is fine.
