Best Pasture Weed Killer: The Weed Picks the Product

Arkansas trials give a product, a rate and a month for each weed — and for horsenettle, three consecutive years. Look up the weed before you buy a bottle.

Two filters before any product

Neither of these is about efficacy, and both can eliminate a product that works.

The grazing and haying interval. UGA:

“Most herbicides have grazing and feeding restrictions stated on the label that limit the use of the crop for livestock feed… anywhere from seven days to one year.”

On a smallholding with two or three paddocks, a long interval on your only summer grazing is not an inconvenience — it is a disqualification. And the headline number may not be yours:

“Many products that have no grazing restrictions for beef cattle will have grazing restrictions for dairy cattle.”

Whether the stand carries clover. Clover is forage and a nitrogen source in most grass pastures, and it is also a broadleaf plant. Arkansas names the products that remove it:

“Banvel, Clarity, Grazon P+D, GrazonNext HL, metsulfuron 60 DF, PastureGard HL, Remedy Ultra, Surmount, Tordon 22K and Weedmaster will kill all clover. White clover has some tolerance for 2,4-D amine at rates up to 1 lb ai/A. Other clovers (red, crimson, arrowleaf, etc.) do not.”

Three things to read out of that table.

The month is a specification. Buttercup in late February, buckhorn plantain in late May, wild garlic in the depth of winter. A correct product applied in the wrong month is the commonest way this money gets wasted, and none of these windows is where a homeowner’s instinct puts them.

Some weeds need a multi-year commitment. Horsenettle is the clearest case at three consecutive years, and wild garlic wants a repeat the following year for control Arkansas is careful to describe only as fair. If you are not going to do year two, the honest choice is to spot-mow and spend the money elsewhere.

Some of the best-proven products are restricted-use. Grazon P+D and Tordon appear repeatedly in that data and are not products you can simply buy — they need applicator certification. We name them where the research names them, because knowing the best-documented answer matters even when it is not available to you.

The rates only mean something if you can hit them

Every figure above is per acre, and several are fractions of an ounce. Arkansas describes the equipment its data came from, and one line is a direct warning:

“Boomless nozzles (Boom Buster, Boominator, Boomjet, etc.) are not as accurate as a boom sprayer.”

Their guidance is to “use a boom sprayer when precise application is critical”, with broadcast applications at 15 gal/A and a recommended water volume between 10 and 40 gal/A.

On a smallholding that mostly means two things. Spot-treat where you can — most pasture weed problems on two to twenty acres are patches, and spot treatment keeps the rest of the paddock out of the grazing restriction. The honest summary

There is no best pasture weed killer, and the trial data is the reason: the weed sets the product, the rate and the month, and for horsenettle it sets a three-year commitment. Work in this order — grazing interval for your animals, clover in the stand or not, then look the weed up. Spot-treat where the weeds are patches, calibrate whatever you spray, and if a recommendation turns out to be a restricted-use product, that is worth knowing rather than working around.

What is the best pasture weed killer?

The question does not have a product answer, and Arkansas's trial data shows why: each weed comes with its own product, its own rate and its own month. Buttercup is a late February job at 1 to 2 pt/A of 2,4-D amine. Dogfennel wants spraying at 6 to 12 inches tall. Wild garlic is a December to March application and even then Arkansas rates the control as only fair. Horsenettle cannot be finished at all in one season. Identify the weed, then read across.

Which weed needs more than one year?

Horsenettle, explicitly. Arkansas: complete horsenettle control will not be achieved with a single herbicide application, and you should spray for three consecutive years to reach the 90 to 100% control range. That is worth knowing before you buy, because a single season that leaves horsenettle standing is the expected result rather than a failed application. Budget three years of the same treatment or do not start.

Will these products kill my clover?

Most of them will. Arkansas lists the products that will kill all clover by name, and it includes PastureGard HL, metsulfuron and the dicamba products. One nuance is worth having: white clover has some tolerance for 2,4-D amine at rates up to 1 lb ai/A, while other clovers — red, crimson, arrowleaf — do not. If the clover in the stand is forage rather than a weed, 2,4-DB is the family member built to spare legumes.

Why does the grazing restriction matter more than the price?

Because it decides whether you can use the product at all. UGA: most herbicides have grazing and feeding restrictions stated on the label that limit the use of the crop for livestock feed anywhere from seven days to one year. On two or three paddocks, a long interval on your only summer grazing is not an inconvenience, it is a disqualification. Are boomless nozzles good enough?

Arkansas is direct that they are not as accurate: boomless nozzles such as Boom Buster, Boominator and Boomjet are not as accurate as a boom sprayer, and their guidance is to use a boom sprayer when precise application is critical. Their broadcast trials run 15 gal/A with a recommended water volume between 10 and 40 gal/A. On the rates in this article, which run from half an ounce to several pints per acre, accuracy is the difference between the published result and a guess.
