More fertilizer is wasted on timing than on any other mistake. The same bag, spread on the same lawn, can build deep roots in one month and feed nothing but weeds and fungus in another. Timing is decided by one thing: feed grass when it is actively growing — and the two grass families grow at completely different times of year.

First: Know Which Family Your Grass Is In

Every fertilizer timing decision follows from this one fact, because the two families run on opposite calendars:

  • Cool-season grasses — tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue. They grow hardest in spring and fall, and they survive summer rather than grow through it. Northern lawns.
  • Warm-season grasses — Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, centipede, buffalograss. They wake up late in spring, grow flat-out through summer heat, and go dormant after frost. Southern lawns. Two of those are exceptions to everything on this page: centipede and buffalograss are damaged by the nitrogen the others want, and on buffalograss K-State ties the weeds themselves to overfeeding.
In Hawaii, most lawns are Bermuda — so the warm-season schedule below is the one to follow, and your feeding window is: Rate follows species: hybrid bermudagrass has the highest requirement, zoysia, St. Augustine and seashore paspalum are intermediate, and centipede needs the least. Because growth never stops and the soils leach, the pattern is lighter and more frequent rather than two or three big applications — and seashore paspalum wants nitrate-N rather than ammonium-N during establishment.

The Cool-Season Schedule: Fall Is King

The single most useful fact in cool-season lawn care: the fall feeding matters more than every other application combined. In fall the plant puts nitrogen into roots and stored energy instead of blade growth — that’s what produces the lawn that greens up early, resists summer stress and crowds out weeds the following year.

  • Early fall (September): the main feeding of the year, as summer heat breaks and growth resumes.
  • Late fall (late October–November): a second application while the grass is still green but top growth has slowed. This one drives root storage — the rate, and why the bag sold for it underdoses, are in winterizer fertilizer.
  • Spring (April–May): one light feeding after the first flush of growth slows — not at the first warm day. Heavy early nitrogen builds soft blades with shallow roots, exactly the wrong trade before summer.
  • Summer: skip it. Cool-season grass is semi-dormant in heat. Nitrogen now stresses the plant and feeds diseases like brown patch instead.

One caution for snowy regions: pushing lush growth with very late nitrogen and then letting it go into winter long and soft is a classic setup for snow mold — make the last feeding while the grass can still use it, and keep mowing until growth stops — which happens at a temperature, not a date.

Nebraska states the same shape in one sentence and then gives the reason, which is the part worth understanding rather than obeying: “For cool-season grasses like tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass, fertilize lightly in spring and early summer, apply little to none in summer, and apply most of the fertilizer after Labor Day.”

The cost of getting it backwards is not just wasted product. “Applying high rates of N in spring and summer stimulates excess leaf growth at the expense of root growth. Not only does this increase mowing requirements, it reduces turf quality during the summer and potentially increases susceptibility to heat, drought, and pests.” Leaf at the expense of root, then a July that tests the root you did not grow.

Two diagnostics from the same publication, and they cost nothing. Nebraska treats white clover and the disease rust as readings rather than problems: both indicate the lawn needs more annual nitrogen. So a lawn going cloverish or turning orange underfoot in late summer is telling you about the fertiliser programme, and lawn rust covers the second one in full — including why the fix there is a quarter to a half pound rather than a full feeding.

And a trap in the spring bag. Most pre-emergent products carry nitrogen as the carrier, so an April crabgrass application is also a nitrogen application at exactly the season Nebraska says needs little. Their advice is to buy a low-N or high-slow-release version for that pass and count it against the programme rather than treating it as free.

The Warm-Season Schedule: Wait for Green-Up

Warm-season lawns punish impatience. The grass doesn’t take up meaningful nitrogen until soil has warmed and the lawn is fully green — not half green, not “mostly there.” Feeding earlier hands the nitrogen to henbit, chickweed and other winter weeds that are wide awake while your Bermuda is still asleep.

  • Late spring (after 100% green-up): the first real feeding of the year.
  • Summer (June–July): the main growing season — this is when warm-season grass can actually use a full-rate feeding.
  • Early fall (by September): a lighter, final application. Then stop: late nitrogen delays dormancy and leaves tender growth for the first frost to burn.
  • Winter: nothing. Dormant grass takes up nothing; anything you spread leaches or runs off.
The frost calendar sets your bookends: in Hawaii the last spring frost lands around no date at all — Hawaii has no frost season, which is why a mainland seasonal calendar has to be rebuilt here rather than shifted a few weeks, and the first fall frost around no date at all — frost reaches only the high summits of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Haleakala, never the elevations where lawns are kept — make the final feeding at least six weeks before that first frost so growth hardens off in time. Hawaii's soils change the technique too: Volcanic soils throughout, of two very different kinds: Andisols formed in ash on the younger slopes (Hilo, the state soil, is one and covers about 21,000 acres of prime ground) and highly weathered Oxisols on the old windward slopes with fast drainage means nitrogen washes past the roots quickly — use slow-release products and split your feedings into smaller doses.

The Hawaii Season Checklist

Feeding never happens in isolation — it has to slot between the other jobs on Hawaii's calendar. Here is how the year actually runs for a Bermuda lawn in your climate (The steepest rainfall gradient in the United States, from leeward slopes under 20 inches a year to windward mountain slopes measured in hundreds.   • Spring: There is no green-up to wait for; treat this as a period of the year rather than a starting gun
  • Spring: Set mowing height by species and hold it: seashore paspalum below an inch, and the others to their own range
  • Spring: Feed light and often rather than heavily — leaching soils and non-stop growth both argue for it
  • Spring: Survey for little fire ant with bait sticks before doing any work that moves mulch or soil around
  • Summer: Watch the leeward and windward halves of your own property differently; the rainfall gradient can operate across a single lot
  • Summer: Scout for lawn armyworm and grass webworm damage, which appears as scattered thinning rather than a defined patch
  • Fall: Nothing changes seasonally, so use this period for the jobs a mainland calendar would put in autumn: aeration, dethatching, renovation
  • Fall: Take a soil test — ADSC drop-off is Mondays 9 to 3:30 and Tuesdays 9 to 11, so plan the trip
  • Fall: Read the phosphorus figure as availability, not total: these soils fix it

None of those rates survives a bad application. A schedule is expressed in pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, and the only thing that converts a bag into that number is a spreader you have calibrated — the setting printed on the bag is a starting guess for one machine, not a measurement of yours.

That last part is not only tidiness in Hawaii. The local rule is: extension-guidance. Our state research records no dated fertilizer blackout here, which makes the timing question purely agronomic rather than legal. Fertilizer swept off a hard surface is the single easiest way to breach a rule you otherwise complied with, and Hawaii Department of Agriculture is the office that administers this side of it.

The Law in Hawaii

  • Also on the books: Hawaii was the first state in the country to ban chlorpyrifos, under Act 45 of 2018 — the outright ban took full effect on January 1, 2023, with no permits available after that
  • Also on the books: The same Act created a 100-foot buffer zone around schools during school hours in which restricted-use pesticides may not be applied, and annual reporting of restricted-use pesticide applications to the Department of Agriculture
  • Also on the books: Hawaii has no statewide restriction on phosphorus in lawn fertilizer, and the phosphorus question here is agronomic anyway: volcanic soils fix it, so the useful figure is availability
  • Also on the books: Quarantine and invasive-species rules matter to lawn work in a way they do not on the mainland — soil, mulch and potted plants are how little fire ant and other pests move between islands and properties
  • Grass mix matters too: beyond the dominant Bermuda, Hawaii lawns commonly grow Zoysia (both Zoysia matrella and Zoysia japonica are common here), Seashore Paspalum (the salt-tolerant one, mown below an inch, and it barely responds to ammonium nitrogen — use nitrate-N to establish it), St. Augustine — and in USDA 9a–13a, a mixed yard can genuinely need two different feeding calendars.

Local ordinances layer on top of state rules, so when in doubt check your municipality — and remember the product label is the legal floor everywhere.

The Mistakes That Waste the Whole Bag

  • Feeding at the first warm day of spring. The classic one. Cool-season lawns get soft growth and shallow roots; warm-season lawns feed their weeds.   • Fertilizing before a storm. Rain you can’t control washes nitrogen past the roots and into storm drains. It’s the one timing mistake that’s also a legal problem — several states and many municipalities restrict fertilizing before forecast heavy rain, and some ban phosphorus or set seasonal blackout windows outright. How often should I fertilize my lawn?

Two to four feedings a year is right for most home lawns — the exact number matters less than the timing. A cool-season lawn (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass) does best with one light spring feeding and one or two fall feedings. A warm-season lawn (Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia) is fed after it fully greens up in late spring, once in midsummer, and lightly in early fall. More applications than that mostly buy extra mowing, not extra health.

Is it better to fertilize in spring or fall?
