How to Kill Kudzu: The Big Root Is Not the Target

Alabama Extension: the large woody root cannot sprout. Kudzu regrows from root crowns at the soil surface — which is what you can actually reach and kill.

Everyone who digs into a kudzu patch finds the same thing: an enormous woody root, and the conclusion that this is hopeless.

Alabama Cooperative Extension’s answer to that is the most useful sentence written about the plant. The large root cannot sprout.

“No, you do not need to remove the whole root. The large root is a storage organ loaded with energy reserves, but it cannot sprout.”

What regrows is something else entirely — and it is small, shallow, and cuttable.

The Root Crown Is The Target

Follow any kudzu vine to where it enters the soil and dig around it a little. Alabama Extension describes what you will find: “several buds, new sprouts, or mature vines emerging from just at, or slightly below, the soil surface. This is the root crown.”

That knot is the plant’s regrowth organ, and it is the only one. Their instruction is exact:

“To stop new kudzu vine growth, cut just below the root crown and remove it from the soil. Kudzu cannot regrow from below the root crown and does not sprout from lateral roots.”

This changes the shape of the whole job. You are not excavating a taproot the size of a fire hydrant. You are finding and severing knots at the surface — with, per Alabama, “a shovel or pick axe to expose the base of the root crown” and then “a sharp hatchet, axe, or small handsaw to cut the root below the root crown.” They note pruning shears manage small crowns but not large ones, and a hoe is not enough because the roots are fibrous or woody.

One trap they name, and it is easy to walk into. Vines lying under a few inches of leaf litter can root where they lie:

“This gives them the appearance of lateral roots, but they are not. Buried vines can root, making control more difficult because these hidden vines may produce many new shoots.”

So the count of crowns you can see is not the count of crowns you have. Rake the litter back before you decide the patch is small.

When to look: Alabama notes root crowns are easiest to find in spring, when new vine growth is starting, or after mowing or a herbicide pass when new sprouts appear. Once the canopy of leaves is out, they say, “root crowns are difficult to find.”

Measure Your Root Crowns

Here is a diagnostic that tells you how long this is going to take, and it costs nothing but a tape measure.

The USDA Forest Service publication ties difficulty directly to the age of the patch:

“Older kudzu patches, with large roots, are the most difficult to eradicate. Roots will be large when the patch is over 10 years old or when vines have spread into nearby trees.”

And then the measurable version: “Examine the kudzu root crowns, which are woody knots at the soil surface. If many of the root crowns are over 2 inches in diameter, it will probably require a higher herbicide rate and more retreatments for eradication.”

This is worth doing before you buy anything, because it decides whether you are running an eradication project or a containment project. Both are legitimate. Choosing one deliberately is what stops people abandoning the effort in year two.

Two Sprays A Year Not One

Most kudzu control fails on scheduling rather than chemistry, and Alabama Extension names the failure directly:

“However, a single annual treatment is not sufficient.”

Their prescription is a pair:

  1. Late spring or early summer, “after the leaves have fully expanded” — the trigger is the plant, not the date.
  2. Late summer or early fall, on “the new kudzu growth that emerged after the first treatment.”

And a rate sheet worth having, because “glyphosate” is not a rate. Mississippi State’s kudzu publication (P3187) tabulates the actives with numbers attached: glyphosate at a “2% solution or 128 oz/acre”, picloram at “64 oz/acre”, metsulfuron at “4 oz/acre”. Two things follow from seeing them side by side. The glyphosate figure is the one a homeowner can actually mix — 2% is roughly 2.5 fl oz per gallon of a 41% concentrate — while picloram and metsulfuron are per-acre products with residual soil activity, which is a different decision on a residential lot than on a right-of-way.

Mississippi State also names the mechanical failure precisely, and it is not the one people expect: “because stems can propagate through fragmentation, be careful to remove all stems”, and for hand removal to work at all “the root must be removed from the soil.” So a session with a brush cutter that leaves stem pieces on the ground has planted as much as it cleared.

They add that this beats the intuitive approach: “This approach will be more effective than waiting until late summer to start a control program.” Late summer is the single best moment for one foliar pass, which is exactly why one pass is the tempting mistake — the first application forces the plant to spend reserves regrowing, and the second catches it while it is spending rather than storing.

Residential options are narrower than the forestry literature suggests. Alabama:

“While several products are labeled for kudzu control in forestry and rights-of-way, a limited number of herbicides can be used for kudzu control in residential settings.”

Those are the glyphosate and triclopyr products.

One detail from Alabama’s own product table that is easy to get backwards. Their cut-stump concentrations differ by active: the triclopyr entries are applied at 100% on a cut stump, the glyphosate entries at 50%. That is not a small difference on a job where you are treating stems one at a time, and it is a label figure rather than a rule of thumb — check the bottle in your hand.

And a caution they attach to every product on that list: use them carefully “to prevent potential damage to nearby desirable vegetation, including trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses, and vegetable gardens.” Kudzu grows exactly where that vegetation is.

The Vine In The Tree

Do not spray upward. Alabama Extension rules it out explicitly:

“It is not effective to spray only the lower leaves on a kudzu vine when it has grown up into a tree.”

The method instead: “cut any kudzu vines just above the ground and immediately treat the stem with one of the recommended glyphosate herbicides using the cut stump method.” Note immediately — a fresh cut surface takes up herbicide, and one made an hour ago is already closing. The same principle governs every cut-stump job in brush and woody plant control.

Small saplings you want to keep get different treatment, and it is more careful than it looks:

“The recommended herbicides may injure or kill most tree saplings if sprayed on the leaves or green bark. The safest approach is to manually remove vines from saplings and then direct the herbicide spray away from the saplings and onto the kudzu.”

Plus the part people miss: “Be careful not to skin or break the bark of desired saplings to reduce the potential for herbicide uptake when treating kudzu.” A scraped sapling has an open route for whatever you spray nearby — the damage happens while you are pulling vines off it, before any herbicide is mixed.

Timing for cut-stem work favours late summer or fall for effectiveness, but Alabama notes it is often easiest in spring, when the crowns can actually be found.

Mowing Works Only Weekly

Mechanical control is real, and the frequency is the whole story. Alabama sets two conditions.

First, every vine, to the ground. “This is difficult for rotary mowers as many vines lie flat on the ground.” And trimming is not control: “Simply cutting kudzu back (pruning or trimming) to keep it out of the lawn or at your property edge will not provide long-term control.”

Second, the interval. “This technique may take many years of repeated mowing or cutting every week during the summer.” The mechanism is explicit: “Kudzu can tolerate occasional mowing or trimming, but it does not tolerate weekly defoliation to the ground.”

And the failure mode: “If you start a mowing or cutting regime but do not follow through for a few weeks, the kudzu will regrow.”

Weekly, all summer, for years. That is what mowing kudzu means, and it is why crown removal plus a herbicide sequence is what most people end up doing instead.

Grazing And The Kudzu Bug

Two questions that come up constantly, and both have real answers.

Grazing genuinely works at a pressure most properties cannot reach. The USDA Forest Service figure: “Close grazing for 3 to 4 years can eliminate kudzu when 80 percent or more of the vegetative growth is continuously consumed.” They note “all types of grazing animals will readily eat kudzu, but cattle grazing has shown the most success in eradication”, and that August and September overgrazing is particularly helpful. The requirements are a livestock list rather than a gardening list — fencing, water, supplemental feed to maintain animal health, and cutting vines out of draped trees so animals can reach the foliage. Kudzu bugs will not do it for you. Alabama:

“Kudzu bugs may reduce kudzu growth, but they have not yet been shown to eliminate kudzu patches.”

The relationship runs the other way for a homeowner. Kudzu is “the primary host plant for the kudzu bug”, which is why many people start controlling it — and clearing it near the house helps without solving it, because “kudzu bugs can fly for several miles, and some may still find your home.”

The Neighbour Problem

The constraint nobody plans for, and it decides whether eradication is even available to you.

“For eradication, every kudzu plant in and around a patch must be killed or the spread from any surviving plants can make all prior efforts and investments useless. This means that all landowners sharing a patch must arrange to treat the whole patch simultaneously.”

That is the USDA Forest Service, and Alabama Extension reaches the practical version from the other side, advising care when treating along property lines and clear communication with neighbours.

So there are two honest projects, and they are not the same:

  • Eradication requires the whole patch, which usually requires the whole set of owners, treated in the same season.
  • Containment is a boundary you defend — crown removal and a two-pass herbicide sequence on your side of the line, repeated indefinitely, accepting reinvasion pressure from next door.

Containment is not defeat. It is the correct plan when the patch is larger than your control, and naming it as the plan is what makes it sustainable.

One more case worth knowing, because it is a genuinely common surprise. Alabama on building on an infested lot: most construction that removes the topsoil removes the root crowns — but “if the topsoil containing the root crowns is put back on the site, many will sprout and begin to reinfest the site.” The soil you paid to keep brings the plant back.

The nearest thing to this job on a smaller scale is poison ivy, and the reasoning transfers almost intact: a perennial vine, a reserve you cannot reach in one pass, and triclopyr or glyphosate applied when the plant is moving sugars downward rather than when it looks worst. The Short Version

Stop digging for the taproot. It cannot sprout. Find the root crowns at the soil surface, rake back the litter to find the hidden ones, and cut below them.

Measure a few crowns. Many over two inches across, or vines already up in trees, means a multi-year campaign rather than a season.

Spray twice a year — after full leaf expansion, then again on the regrowth in late summer or autumn. One annual pass is the standard reason this fails.

Cut and treat the stumps of anything in a tree, immediately, and never spray up.

And decide honestly whether you are eradicating or containing, because that depends on the property line as much as on the herbicide.
