Almost nobody waters their lawn wrong by a little. The two common mistakes are enormous and opposite: fifteen minutes every single morning, or nothing at all until the lawn turns grey. Both produce a lawn that cannot survive a hot week without you.
The fix is one number and one habit. The number is about one inch of water a week, rain included. The habit is delivering it in two or three deep soakings rather than seven shallow ones — because how often you water decides how deep your roots grow, and root depth is the whole ballgame in July.
The Rule: One Inch a Week, Including Rain
The EPA’s WaterSense program puts the baseline plainly: a typical landscape needs about an inch of water a week, counting rainfall, and that figure shifts with where you live, the weather that week and what you are growing.
Two words in that sentence do most of the work.
“Including rainfall.” The inch is a total, not an addition. Half an inch of rain on Tuesday means you owe half an inch, not a full one. A five-dollar rain gauge on a fence post removes all the guesswork here, and it is the single cheapest upgrade to a lawn routine.
“About.” One inch is a starting point you adjust from, not a prescription. Sandy soil holds less and needs the same total split into more frequent, smaller doses. Clay holds more but accepts it slowly. Shade needs less than full sun. A dormant lawn needs almost none.
Where the water actually goes
Same weekly total, two different habits. The difference is not how green the lawn looks this Friday — it is how deep the roots are when a heat wave arrives.

The soil never dries, so the roots have no reason to go looking. Shallow roots mean the lawn depends on you daily — and the top inch is exactly where weed seeds germinate.

The same total water, delivered less often, pulls roots down after it. Deep roots reach moisture the surface has already lost, which is what carries a lawn through July.
Depth scale is illustrative. Actual wetting depth per minute depends on your soil and sprinkler output — the catch-can test below measures yours.
Why “Every Day” Backfires
Grass roots grow toward water and stop where the water stops. That single fact explains why the most diligent-looking watering routine produces the most fragile lawn.
Water lightly every morning and the top inch of soil never dries out. The plant has no reason to send roots deeper, so it doesn’t. Now:
- The lawn cannot ride out a missed week. Its entire root system lives in the layer of soil that dries fastest.
- Weeds get the advantage. Crabgrass and other annual weed seeds germinate in the top half-inch of constantly moist soil. You are running a nursery for them. See how to get rid of crabgrass.
- Disease pressure climbs, because leaf blades spend more hours wet.
- Thatch thickens. Perpetually damp surface conditions encourage shallow, spongy growth above the soil line.
- The mower can undo all of it. Root depth tracks cutting height, so a lawn cut short cannot hold the water you give it — mowing height is the cheapest drought tolerance available. Returning the clippings helps for the same reason: bagging or not changes how fast the surface dries.
Deep, infrequent watering does the opposite. The surface dries between sessions, moisture sits deeper down, and roots chase it. That lawn goes into August with reserves.
How Often, Exactly
Frequency depends on grass family and soil more than on the calendar. These are starting points for an established lawn in active growth — not new seed, which has its own rules further down.

Soil changes the split more than the total:
- Sandy soil drains fast and holds little. Same weekly inch, spread over three sessions instead of two.
- Clay soil holds water but takes it slowly, and a long run just makes runoff. Use cycle-and-soak: run 15 minutes, wait an hour, run 15 minutes again. The pause lets the first pass move down instead of off.
- Compacted soil rejects water regardless of type. If a screwdriver will not go in, aeration comes before any irrigation change.
Measure Before You Set a Timer
Everything above is in inches. Your sprinkler is set in minutes. Converting one to the other is a twenty-minute job you do once.
Measure your own sprinkler: the catch-can test
Every sprinkler applies water at a different rate, so nobody can tell you your run time. Twenty minutes with three cans gives you the real number — once.
Output drops with distance — which is why the cans go across the throw, not side by side.
Set 3 cans in a line
Straight, flat-sided cans — tuna or cat food. Put one close to the head, one mid-throw, one at the far edge. Spread across the throw, never clustered.
Run the zone for 15 minutes
One zone at a time. Note the exact minutes; the whole calculation hangs on it.
Measure each can and average
A ruler against the inside wall. In the example above: 0.5 + 0.4 + 0.25 = 1.15, divided by 3 = about 0.38" in 15 minutes.
Do the arithmetic once
Half an inch needs 0.5 ÷ 0.38 × 15 ≈ 20 minutes. Two sessions of 20 minutes a week delivers about an inch — the standard target.
The dry can is also a diagnosis. If one can comes up far short every time, that corner is not a fertilizer problem or a disease — it is a coverage problem, and it will brown out first in every heat wave until the head is adjusted.
Do this per zone. Zones differ more than people expect — a rotor zone and a fixed-spray zone on the same system can be three times apart in output, which is why one corner of a yard browns every summer while the rest looks fine.
The three things that turn this into a number
Tuna tins work. But five dollars of the right equipment means you actually keep doing it, and the whole point is that this becomes routine rather than a one-afternoon experiment.

The footprint test is the one worth learning, because it catches the problem in the window where watering still prevents damage rather than repairing it.
Time of Day Matters More Than People Think
Early morning, roughly 4 to 9 a.m., is correct almost everywhere. Wind and temperature are at their lowest, so more of what leaves the sprinkler reaches the soil, and the blades dry off as the sun rises.
Evening is the one to avoid. The grass stays wet all night, and extended leaf wetness is the condition nearly every turf disease needs to get established. A lawn watered at 8 p.m. in humid weather is being set up for brown patch.
Midday is merely wasteful, not harmful — a myth worth retiring is that droplets act as lenses and scorch the blades. They don’t. You just lose a good share of the water to evaporation before it does any work.
How strictly that morning rule applies in New Mexico comes down to one local number — humidity: Arid to semi-arid with very low humidity most of the year, broken by the monsoon — and the elevation range means Chama and Las Cruces share almost nothing climatically. In drier air, foliage dries quickly enough that an evening session is less risky — but early morning still loses the least water to evaporation, so there is no reason to choose otherwise. Signs you are applying too little: footprints that stay, a blue-grey cast, folded blades, and browning that starts on slopes, next to hot pavement and in sprinkler shadows — the places that dry first.
The distinction is made with a screwdriver, not with your eyes.
The Overwatering Lawn, and the Diseases It Invites
Most turf pathogens are already present in the soil. What they need is opportunity, and prolonged leaf wetness is the main one. This is why watering practice is a disease-control decision as much as a growth decision.

Watering a Lawn in New Mexico
The weekly inch is national. Almost nothing about delivering it is. Below is what the researched profile for New Mexico actually says, and what each line changes about a sprinkler schedule for a Bermuda lawn across USDA zones 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a.
The soil you are really watering
Calcareous desert soils across the basins and mesas, with caliche — a cemented lime hardpan — at shallow depth in much of the state; deeper alluvium along the Rio Grande and the river valleys. Drainage here reads: Fast through the sandy desert soils until it reaches caliche, at which point it stops — a shallow lime pan perches water, blocks roots and turns a deep watering into a shallow one, so the depth to caliche matters more here than the surface texture does.
- It will not hold a large single application. Water applied faster than this ground can hold it keeps going straight past the root zone. Split the weekly total across three shorter sessions rather than two, and expect to water more often here than a clay state would — the total is the same, the delivery is not.
- There is less reservoir than the rule assumes. A shallow profile cannot bank a full inch, however deep you water, because there is nowhere for it to sit. Three smaller sessions store more usable water here than two large ones.

Granular fertilizers, pre-emergents and most granular controls do nothing sitting on dry blades — they have to be watered in. That makes these four windows a watering calendar as much as an application calendar in New Mexico:

- Summer: NMSU's water figures are the ones to plan against: cool-season turf uses about 0.26 to 0.50 inch a day in summer, roughly 1.8 to 3.5 inches a week, and about 38 inches over a year, against about 24 inches for warm-season turf
- Summer: Schedule irrigation for the driest quarter of the lawn rather than the average — residential systems here average a lower-quarter distribution uniformity around 0.50, so half the lawn gets far less than the timer suggests
- Summer: During the monsoon, turn the controller down: heavy convective rain on caliche runs off, but it still resets the soil moisture the system is watering for
- Fall: Cool-season lawns in the north: late August into September is both the seeding window and the most valuable feeding
- Fall: Warm-season lawns in the south: last feeding well before dormancy, and expect colour loss from the first frost regardless
- Fall: Take a soil test and specify the New Mexico set — Olsen phosphorus, saturated paste EC, sodium adsorption ratio and percent lime
- Winter: Warm-season lawns are dormant and brown from first frost until the ground warms; that is normal, not winterkill
- Winter: Water occasionally through a dry, windy winter — especially in the north, where an open winter desiccates turf with the ground frozen
Where local rules set the schedule for you

When your watering days are assigned rather than chosen, deep and infrequent stops being a technique and becomes the only option available. Fewer permitted days means each session has to reach further down, which is exactly what a measured run time and cycle-and-soak are for — and it is why the catch-can test matters more in New Mexico than in a state that can water whenever it likes.
New Seed and New Sod Break Every Rule Above
Everything so far assumes an established lawn with a root system. Seed and sod have neither, so the logic inverts: they need light and frequent, not deep and infrequent.
- New seed: NC State’s instruction is to “keep the top 1.5 inches of the soil moist”, which “may require light watering two or three times a day for 7 to 21 days.” Note the depth — this is wetter and deeper than the surface dampening people usually picture, and letting it dry once can end the whole seeding. They add that bluegrass “takes 7 to 14 days longer to germinate than other cool-season grasses”, so a bluegrass mix extends the whole regime.
- After germination: lengthen the intervals and deepen each session over three to four weeks, until you arrive at the normal schedule. This tapering is what trains roots downward.
- New sod: water daily, sometimes twice daily, for the first week or two, then taper the same way. Lift a corner to check that moisture is reaching the soil beneath the sod, not just the sod itself.
- Sprayed (hydroseeded) lawns are the strict case. Penn State and Michigan State both note that hydroseed sits on the soil surface rather than in contact with it, so it “may dry out and die” — the mulch layer is standing in for soil that would otherwise hold moisture around the seed. Set Up a Watering Routine That Holds
Measure one zone with three cans20 minutes, once
Run the zone 15 minutes, measure the cans, average them. That number converts inches into minutes for your specific sprinkler, and it is the only way to know your run time.

The One Piece Of Hardware Worth It

Every rule on this page assumes you water in response to the lawn rather than to a clock. A timer cannot do that, which is the largest single source of wasted irrigation.

What This Doesn’t Need
There is no product recommendation in this guide, because watering does not have one. The tools that fix a watering problem are a rain gauge, three empty cans, a screwdriver and a calendar you are willing to ignore when the soil says so — about eight dollars of hardware in total.
Where products do matter is what you apply to a correctly watered lawn: feeding inside your regional window, and treating a problem you have actually identified. Getting the water right first is what makes any of that work, because a lawn with roots one inch deep cannot use what you feed it.

How often should I water my lawn?
Two or three times a week in the growing season, not every day. The target is about one inch of water per week in total, including whatever rain falls, delivered in a small number of deep soakings rather than daily sips. Watering deeply and less often drives roots down toward the moisture, and a deep-rooted lawn survives heat that kills a shallow-rooted one. New seed and new sod are the exception — they need light, frequent watering until they establish.
How long should I run my sprinklers?
Nobody can tell you, because sprinkler output varies enormously — you have to measure once. Set three straight-sided cans across the sprinkler's throw, run the zone for 15 minutes, then measure and average the depth. If you collected about a third of an inch in 15 minutes, half an inch takes roughly 22 minutes, and two of those sessions a week delivers your inch. On clay soil, split each session into two shorter cycles an hour apart so the water soaks in instead of running off.
Is it better to water every day or every other day?
Every other day is better, and twice a week is usually better still. Daily watering keeps only the top inch of soil wet, so roots stay in that top inch — which is also where weed seeds germinate and where the soil dries out first in a heat wave. The lawn ends up permanently dependent on you. Longer gaps between deeper soakings let the surface dry while moisture stays deeper down, and roots follow it.
What time of day is best to water grass?
Early morning, roughly between 4 and 9 a.m. Wind and heat are lowest, so less water evaporates before it reaches the soil, and the blades dry as the sun comes up. Evening watering is the one to avoid: it leaves foliage wet through the night, which is exactly the condition most turf diseases need to establish. Midday watering is not harmful to the grass, just wasteful.
How do I know if I'm overwatering my lawn?
Push a screwdriver into the soil — if it slides in easily and the ground feels spongy underfoot a day after watering, you are applying too much. Other signs: mushrooms, moss, a thickening spongy thatch layer, water running onto the pavement, and yellowing grass that does not respond to fertilizer because suffocated roots cannot take nitrogen up. Overwatered lawns also get more disease, since most turf pathogens need extended leaf wetness.
Should I water more in a heat wave?
Water the same depth, slightly more often — do not switch to daily sprinkles. A lawn with deep roots can be allowed to go dormant and straw-coloured in extreme heat and will green up when temperatures drop; that is a survival mechanism, not death. What genuinely kills turf in a heat wave is a shallow root system that never learned to reach for water, which is what daily watering produces.
