Long soil residual is the feature and the danger: imazapyr is taken up by roots, so it can kill trees whose roots reach treated ground.

Our Verdict

A legitimate product with a genuinely narrow correct use, and the wrong purchase for most people who end up with it. Imazapyr is non-selective and — unlike glyphosate, which Purdue notes has no soil activity — it is strongly soil-active with residual measured in many months. That is exactly what you want for bare ground you intend to keep bare: a gravel yard, a fence line, under a guardrail, site preparation. It is exactly what you do not want anywhere near something you value, because root uptake means damage is not limited to what the spray touched. Trees and shrubs whose roots extend under a treated strip can be killed by an application that never contacted their foliage, and that damage appears months later when the cause is no longer obvious. Two further consequences of the residual: nothing will establish in treated ground for a long time, so this is not a pre-renovation product, and the label's replant intervals are the binding constraint rather than a suggestion. Our rating reflects the mismatch between how it is bought and what it does, not the product's quality — used on genuine bare ground it works extremely well.

✅ Pros

  • Very long residual, which is the point on bare ground and fence lines
  • Broad spectrum — the listing claims 185 annual, biennial and perennial weeds plus brush
  • One quart treats a large area at bare-ground rates
  • 4.5 across 258 Amazon ratings

⚠️ Cons

  • Root uptake can kill trees and shrubs whose roots reach treated soil, with no visible spray contact
  • Residual measured in many months — nothing establishes in treated ground, so it is not a pre-renovation herbicide
  • Frequently bought by people who wanted imazethapyr, which is a completely different, legume-selective product
  • Damage often appears long after application, when the cause is no longer obvious

Where our facts come from

Label read on EPA's label database

EPA Reg. No. 81927-24

Read the label yourself →

We opened this product's accepted label on EPA's own Pesticide Product Label System — the strongest source available for what a product is registered to do.

What we found when we read it

Full label read 2026-08-02 on EPA PPLS. Product name 'Alligare Imazapyr 4 SL', EPA Reg. 81927-24, isopropylamine salt of imazapyr 52.6% — which is the 4 lb/gal our record already stated. Same registrant (Alligare, company 81927) as the Triclopyr 4 we review, and the reason this product appears on the food plot pages at all is name confusion with imazethapyr: three letters apart, completely different soil behaviour.

Where this page and the container disagree, the container wins — the label is the legal authority on rates and restrictions. How to read one yourself.
