Best Grass and Weed Killer: Three Jobs, Three Products
NC State: glyphosate reaches the roots and has little or no soil residual. Contact killers do neither. Decide which of the three jobs you actually have.

Three jobs, one shelf
Walk the non-selective aisle and almost every bottle says the same three words. The products behind those words do genuinely different things, and the mismatch is where the money goes:

Nothing on that list is a bad product. Buying the second one when you needed the first is the single most common failure in this category, and the label rarely makes the difference obvious.
The line that decides everything
NC State draws it in one pair of sentences. On glyphosate:
“Glyphosate is a systemic (translocated) herbicide that moves from the treated foliage to other plant parts, including the roots.”
On the alternatives:
“All of these products have contact-type activity. That means they do not translocate to the roots of treated plants.”
And the consequence, stated plainly:
“Glyphosate kills annual and perennial weeds” — while contact products “will only knock down the top growth of perennial weeds.”
So the target’s life cycle decides the chemistry. An annual has one season and no reserve to regrow from; killing its top growth is killing the plant. A perennial keeps a root system, a crown or a rhizome, and it treats a contact application as a haircut.
Contact products are not useless on perennials — they are a maintenance approach rather than a control one. NC State: “With regular repeat applications, these products can be useful postemergence tools.” Read regular repeat as the actual cost, and decide whether you would rather do it four times or once.
Their advantage is speed, and it is real: one of the products in that comparison shows “tissues show symptoms in less than 30 minutes.”
Residual is the dangerous one
This is the property that separates a gravel-drive product from a lawn-renovation product, and the one people do not check.
Penn State’s definition:
“The length of time a herbicide remains active in soil is called ‘soil persistence,’ or ‘soil residual life.’”
Glyphosate has almost none. NC State:
“Glyphosate has little or no soil residual. It is rapidly bound by clay particles in the soil rendering it inactive.”
Which explains a complaint that is not a fault. Spray a gravel drive with glyphosate, and in three weeks there are weeds again. Those are not survivors, they are new plants germinating from seed into ground that has nothing left in it. The product did what it does.
If you want the ground to stay bare, you need the opposite property — and Penn State names the families that have it:
“Herbicide families that have persistent members include triazines, uracils, phenylureas, sulfonylureas, dinitroanilines, isoxazolidiones, imidazolinones, and certain plant growth regulators belonging to the pyridine family.”
Imazapyr is an imidazolinone. That is why it keeps a driveway clear for a season, and it is exactly why it does not belong near anything you want to keep. Roots extend far beyond a canopy, so “twenty feet from the tree” is not a safe distance, and a residual that moves with water down a slope reaches further still. Cost per finished gallon, not per bottle. A 41% and a 53.8% concentrate are different products. Read the mixing rate on the label for your target, work out how many gallons the container makes, then divide. Ready-to-use bottles are water you paid freight on, and they only win when one bottle finishes the job.
Whether you intend to plant. Glyphosate’s lack of residual is what makes replanting possible, but there is still a waiting period and it depends on what you are planting — how long after Roundup can I plant grass has the numbers. A residual product removes that option entirely for the season.
The sprayer. None of this belongs in the sprayer you use on a lawn. The honest summary
Decide which of the three jobs you have before you read a single label. Roots and all means systemic and means waiting. Brown today means contact and means doing it again. Bare for months means residual and means keeping it away from every root you value. Glyphosate’s near-zero soil residual is a feature when you plan to replant and a disappointment when you wanted the gravel to stay clear — same property, two different expectations, and only one of them is the product’s fault.

What is the best grass and weed killer?
The question has three answers because the shelf sells three different jobs under one name. If you want the plant dead including its roots, you want a systemic — NC State: glyphosate is a systemic (translocated) herbicide that moves from the treated foliage to other plant parts, including the roots. If you want brown by tonight, you want a contact product, and NC State is blunt that these do not translocate to the roots of treated plants. If you want the ground to stay bare for months, you want a residual, which is a different and riskier purchase. Buying the wrong one of those three is the actual failure mode in this category.
Why did the weeds come back after I sprayed?
Usually because the product was a contact killer and the weed was a perennial. NC State puts the limit exactly: contact products will only knock down the top growth of perennial weeds. The leaves die, the root system is untouched, and the plant regrows from it. That is not a defective product — it is the product working as designed on the wrong target. For a perennial you need something that reaches the roots, or you need to accept repeat applications: NC State notes that with regular repeat applications, these products can be useful postemergence tools.
Does glyphosate stay in the soil?
Essentially no, and that is one of its more useful properties. NC State: glyphosate has little or no soil residual. It is rapidly bound by clay particles in the soil rendering it inactive. So it does not keep the ground clear — new weeds germinate from seed in the same spot within weeks. People read that regrowth as failure when it is simply new plants. If you want the ground to stay bare, glyphosate is the wrong tool and a residual product is the right one, with the cautions below.
What is a residual herbicide and when should I avoid one?
One that stays active in the soil and keeps killing what germinates. Penn State's term for it: the length of time a herbicide remains active in soil is called soil persistence, or soil residual life. Avoid it anywhere roots you care about can reach — the imidazolinones, the family imazapyr belongs to, are on Penn State's list of families with persistent members, and a tree twenty feet away has roots much closer than its trunk. Use residuals on gravel, hard standing and fence lines well away from desirable plants, and never on ground you intend to plant.
Do organic weed killers work?
They work fast and they work shallow. NC State's comparison is that the alternatives all have contact-type activity, with one product showing tissue symptoms in less than 30 minutes. So for annual weeds in gravel, a path or a patio, they do the job visibly and quickly. For an established perennial they knock the top off and it returns. Judge them on that basis rather than on the organic label, and expect to reapply.
Which concentration should I buy?
Compare cost per finished gallon rather than per bottle, because the concentrations differ enough to invert the ranking. A 41% concentrate and a 53.8% concentrate are not the same product at different prices — the stronger one makes proportionally more spray from the same container. Work out the mixing rate on the label for your target, then divide. A ready-to-use bottle is mostly water you paid to ship, and it only makes sense when one bottle finishes the job.
Can I use any of these on a lawn?
