Robot Mower for St. Augustine Grass: The Height Problem

Most robots are built for grass mowed below 2.5 inches. St. Augustine wants 2.5–4. UF/IFAS tested 2.4 inches anyway — here is what happened.

Here is the specification conflict nobody puts on the box.

Most robotic mowers were designed for grass mowed below 2.5 inches. St. Augustine grass wants 2.5 to 4 inches. UF/IFAS Extension states both facts in the same paragraph, and adds that the higher requirement “may exceed the limits of some robotic mower models.”

So the interesting question is not whether a robot can drive across a St. Augustine lawn. It is what happens when it cuts that grass shorter than the recommendation — and UF ran exactly that experiment.

The Height Conflict In Numbers

UF/IFAS is direct about the origin of the problem:

“Most autonomous mowers were designed for cool-season grasses, which are typically mowed below 2.5″. In contrast, common Florida grasses, such as St. Augustinegrass, require higher mowing heights (2.5″–4″), which may exceed the limits of some robotic mower models.”

These machines were built for the northern and European lawn. That is a design history, not a conspiracy — but it means the first number a Southern buyer should look up is maximum cutting height, not coverage area, battery life, or app features.

There is a mechanical reason the ceiling is hard to raise. The cutting system is a set of blades “small (<1.5″) compared to traditional mowers (~20″)” on a spinning disk in a low chassis that has to drive over the grass it is about to cut. Set the deck to 4 inches and the machine is riding on top of tall turf, which changes both traction and cut consistency. It is not a software limit.

What UF Found At 2.4 Inches

Rather than declare the mismatch fatal, UF/IFAS’s West Florida Research and Education Center tested it. The researcher, Bryan Unruh, put the question this way:

“The simple question was, can a robotic or autonomous mower’s lower cut height at 2.4 inches maintain hardy St. Augustine grass?”

His verdict: “It actually performed very well. The turf was spectacular and quite healthy when we compared it against results from conventional mowers.”

Those last two are the ones to think about, because they are consequences of the low cut rather than benefits of the machine — UF attributes them “likely due to the lower mowing height.”

For a homeowner, delayed dormancy and earlier green-up read as a longer green season, which is exactly what you wanted. But it does mean the turf is carrying green tissue later into cold weather than a conventionally mown lawn beside it. In the northern edge of the St. Augustine range — the Carolinas, north Georgia, north Texas — that is worth watching rather than assuming, because it is thinner, lower turf entering the cold. One caveat we will state plainly: this was a research plot, on a hardy St. Augustine cultivar, under research-grade management. It establishes that a lower cut can work. It does not establish that every model at its own minimum will maintain every cultivar in every yard, and Extension does not claim it does.

Zoysia Is The Easier Fit

If you have a choice, zoysia is the better pairing — and the results are stronger than the St. Augustine ones.

UF/IFAS: “In zoysiagrass, autonomous mowers produced higher turf quality and greater shoot density compared to traditional mowers. Although they took longer to mow, they used less energy and had slightly lower operating costs.”

Higher quality, denser turf, less energy, lower running cost, at the price of longer run times. And structurally it makes sense: zoysia is maintained lower than St. Augustine, so the height ceiling that constrains a St. Augustine lawn is much less likely to bind at all.

Grass-By-Grass Verdict

The research gap, stated plainly. UF/IFAS: “Limited research exists for bahiagrass, centipedegrass, and bermudagrass lawns.” For three of the major warm-season species there is no published season-long evidence either way. That is a gap in the research, not a verdict — but it means you are the trial.

Zoysia — best fit. Published quality and shoot-density gains, lower energy and operating cost, and a maintenance height most models can reach.

St. Augustine — workable, with conditions. Buy at the top of the cutting range, know that the supporting evidence comes from 2.4 inches rather than the 3–4 inches usually recommended, and accept delayed dormancy as part of the package.

Bermudagrass — unstudied. Mechanically the most plausible of the three unstudied grasses, since bermuda is maintained low and tolerates frequent cutting. But “plausible” is not “published”. Our bermuda care guide has the conventional height ranges to check a model against.

Centipedegrass — unstudied. Centipede is slow-growing and low-input, which sits oddly with a machine designed to cut daily. Nobody has published what that does over a season.

Bahiagrass — poorest fit. This is the one UF singles out. Among the limitations of autonomous mowers, the publication lists that they “cut at a lower mowing height than what is favorable for some Florida grasses (e.g., bahiagrass).” Bahia wants height, and the machine class does not deliver it.

Which Models Actually Reach 4 Inches

This is the table that should decide the purchase, and it is the one nobody publishes: maximum cutting height against UF/IFAS’s 2.5″–4″ requirement. Every figure below comes from the manufacturer’s own published specification, checked one by one.

Two things fall out of that table that no review will tell you.

Four of six reach 4 inches. The height ceiling is no longer the automatic disqualifier it was when UF wrote that it “may exceed the limits of some robotic mower models” — but two of six still fall short, and they happen to be the two cheapest.

The Mammotinos have a floor problem, not a ceiling problem. A 2.2-inch minimum is perfectly fine for St. Augustine, which never wants to be cut that low anyway. It is disqualifying for close-cut bermudagrass. So the machine that suits your St. Augustine lawn today may be the wrong machine if you ever convert to bermuda.

What To Check Before You Buy

For a warm-season lawn, in this order:

  2. Whether your cultivar is a hardy one. The UF result was on hardy St. Augustine.
  3. Irrigation head heights — a daily collision is a different problem from a weekly one, and it is on UF’s operational risk list.

The Trade You Are Actually Making

Strip out the technology and the decision is agronomic: you are accepting a lower mowing height in exchange for a much higher mowing frequency.

For St. Augustine that is a real trade, because height is how the species competes — it shades out weeds and carries drought on leaf area. What UF’s trial suggests is that frequency can compensate for some of the lost height, and how daily clipping affects turf covers the mechanism.

What no extension programme claims is that the trade is free. Height still matters; the robot just changes what you pay for it.

The side effects: it also resulted in delayed winter dormancy and earlier spring green-up, which UF attributes likely to the lower mowing height. Delayed dormancy and early green-up are usually welcome to a homeowner, but they mean the turf is holding green tissue later into the cold season than a conventionally mown lawn — something to weigh in the northern edge of the St. Augustine range.

Are robot mowers better for zoysia than for St. Augustine?

Zoysia is the easier fit, and the results are stronger. UF/IFAS reports that in zoysiagrass, autonomous mowers produced higher turf quality and greater shoot density compared to traditional mowers, and adds an economic note: although they took longer to mow, they used less energy and had slightly lower operating costs. Zoysia is also maintained lower than St. Augustine, so the height ceiling that troubles a St. Augustine lawn is much less likely to bind. If you are choosing between the two grasses and a robot is part of the plan, zoysia is the more compatible pairing.

Which warm-season grasses lack robot mower research?

Three of them, and UF/IFAS says so explicitly: limited research exists for bahiagrass, centipedegrass, and bermudagrass lawns. Bahiagrass gets a specific warning as well — UF lists among the limitations that these mowers cut at a lower mowing height than what is favorable for some Florida grasses, naming bahiagrass as the example.
