Should You Bag Grass Clippings? It Costs Nitrogen
Bagging grass clippings throws away up to a quarter of your lawn's nitrogen — and clippings do not cause thatch. The three times bagging is still right. Guide for New Hampshire, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

Bagging your clippings is extra work that costs you fertilizer. That is the whole article, and it has numbers behind it.
Grass clippings run about 4 percent nitrogen, 2 percent potassium and 1 percent phosphorus, and extension research puts what they return at up to 25 percent of your lawn’s total fertilizer needs across a season. Every bag you drag to the kerb is nitrogen you will buy back in a bag later.
One exception worth knowing before you compost clippings rather than return them: clippings from turf treated with certain pasture-type herbicides stay active in the pile — herbicide carryover in compost covers which actives and how to test a suspect batch.

The water figure is why this works. Clippings are mostly moisture and soft leaf tissue, so they collapse and break down within a few days rather than accumulating. What is left behind is the mineral content, released back into the soil where the roots are.
Recycling clippings reduces the total nitrogen the lawn needs each season. That is not a marginal effect — a quarter of your feeding programme is roughly one application you do not have to make, on a lawn mown thirty-odd times a year.
And the labour comparison is one-directional: not bagging is less work than bagging. There is no version of this where collecting clippings saves you anything.
Clippings Do Not Cause Thatch
This is the belief that keeps people bagging, and it is wrong on the biology.
Thatch is a layer of undecomposed stems, crowns and roots — tough, fibrous, lignin-rich tissue that resists breakdown and builds up between the green growth and the soil.
Clippings are leaf tissue — 80 to 85 percent water, soft, and gone in days.
Extension research is consistent: returning clippings to the lawn does not harm the grass and does not contribute to thatch. The two things are made of different material and behave differently.
One real caveat. If you already have a thatch layer thicker than about half an inch, that existing layer slows everything down, including clipping breakdown — so clippings can add to a problem that is already there. The Three Times Bagging Is Right
Leaving clippings is the default, not an absolute — and NC State’s Carolina Lawns draws the line at the same place, in one sentence that contains both halves: “If clippings are heavy enough to hold the grass down or shade it, catch them or rake and remove them. Otherwise, do not bag the clippings. Allow them to fall into the turf where they will decay and release nutrients.” Note the test they give — smothering, not tidiness. Three situations meet it or beat it.
1. An active fungal outbreak. Clippings can carry spores across the lawn, so during a live disease episode collecting them limits the spread. Identify what you have first: lawn fungus identification. The clearest case is lawn rust, where the spores sit on the leaf surface and Illinois Extension says outright that the rust is removed by the mower blade — there, bagging is not damage control, it is the treatment carrying the inoculum away.
2. Weeds that have gone to seed. If dandelions have puffed or crabgrass has headed out, mowing broadcasts that seed. Bag those cuts, and better still mow before the seed heads form — one dandelion produces up to 15,000 seeds.
3. A cut that got away from you. When the grass is far too long, or wet, the clippings land as thick clumps that sit on the surface and smother what is underneath. Bag or rake that one cut, then go back to leaving them.
Notice that all three are temporary conditions. None of them is a reason to bag every week for years.
The same argument extends to the other thing that falls on a lawn: autumn leaves go back in through the mower rather than into bags — mulching leaves into the lawn has the research and the depth limit.
If You Are Getting Clumps, the Mowing Is Wrong
Clumping is the most common complaint about leaving clippings, and it is a symptom of how you mowed rather than an argument against mulching — the same is true of the other mowing complaint we get, which is stripes that will not hold.
Clippings need to be under about an inch to settle into the canopy and disappear. That length is not a separate rule to remember — it falls out of the one you should already be following: remove no more than a third of the blade height in a single cut. Do that and the clippings are automatically short enough.
So clumps mean one of three things:
- You cut more than a third off, because you waited too long
- You mowed wet grass, which sticks together
- The blade is dull and tearing rather than cutting
All three are fixable without buying anything. The height and frequency logic is in lawn mowing height.
The third one has a caveat worth being straight about: sharpening is free if you already own a file and a vice, and it is a five-minute job with a purpose-made sharpener rather than a twenty-minute one. Either way the point is the same — a torn leaf tip dries out and mulches badly, so a sharp blade is what makes mulching work rather than an upgrade to it.

The maths above is national. What changes locally is how fast clippings break down, how often the three bagging exceptions actually apply, and what the returned nitrogen is worth against your feeding calendar. For a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn across USDA zones 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b:
How fast they disappear here
Local humidity is Humid summers, sharply drier and colder with elevation — the Seacoast and the White Mountains are effectively two climates in a 100-mile state, and rainfall arrives as Roughly 40–50 inches, well distributed, with lasting winter snow cover in the north that is a lawn factor in its own right rather than a footnote. In drier air clippings dry out before they decompose and can sit on the surface longer, so keeping each cut short matters more here than in a humid state. The upside is that the disease exception rarely applies.
Soil underneath: Loamy glacial till across the uplands (Marlow, the state soil, is the pattern); sandy outwash along the Merrimack and Connecticut river valleys, draining: Moderate to fast through the top foot, then stopped by the dense basal-till substratum the glacier compacted — so one square metre can be soggy in spring and drought-stressed in midsummer; fast in the river-valley sand, which wants lighter, more frequent water. pH: Acidic, as glaciated New England soils under conifer and hardwood forest are — lime against a test, and expect the requirement to be real rather than nominal — soil biology does the actual digesting, and near-neutral, moist, uncompacted soil does it fastest.
What the returned nitrogen is worth against your calendar
The local feeding window is One to two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year is UNH's range for a home lawn — lower than the coastal states south of here. The last application of the year should be down before September 15 in northern New Hampshire and October 1 in the south. A quarter of the season's nitrogen coming back through clippings is roughly one of those applications you do not have to make — and on a cool-season lawn fed mainly in autumn, it reduces how much the spring application has to do. When the exceptions actually apply here
- Disease: Snow mold, gray and pink — not an occasional New England nuisance here but an annual expectation wherever snow lies for months, and gray snow mold specifically wants that long cover; Red thread (cool wet springs on ryegrass and fine fescue, and it reads as a nitrogen shortage); Dollar spot; Brown patch (a Seacoast and southern-tier problem more than a North Country one) are documented in New Hampshire — during an active episode of any of these, bag the cuts until it is under control.
- Weeds that seed: Crabgrass (heaviest in the south, thinning northward); Dandelion; White clover; Ground ivy; Broadleaf plantain — mowing over any of these once they have headed out spreads them, so time the cut before the seed forms or bag that pass.
- Growth surges that cause clumping. Locally the post-emergent window is Late May into June, then late August through September. The autumn window closes earlier here than anywhere else in southern New England and seeding runs August 15 to September 30 is the window UNH names, and in the North Country the useful part of it is the first half. Spring seeding works between March and May but commits you to nursing the stand through summer — both sit in the growth flush, which is exactly when the one-third rule tightens the mowing interval and when a missed week produces clumps.
- Frost ends the season: first frost Early September in the North Country and the high valleys; mid-October on the Seacoast, last frost Mid-May inland and at elevation, late April along the coast — which is a full month of growing season between Colebrook and Portsmouth — clippings left on turf that has stopped growing do not break down, so the final cuts of the year are the ones most likely to sit.
- Grasses grown here: Kentucky Bluegrass, Fine Fescues (the low-input choice for thin upland soils and the shade of a wooded lot), Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue (viable in the southern tier and the Seacoast, marginal in the North Country) — coarse-bladed grasses produce bulkier clippings that need shorter cuts to disappear cleanly.
- Local rule: New Hampshire's turf fertilizer law (RSA 431) puts the numbers on the bag rather than on the calendar: a retail turf fertilizer labelled no-phosphate may not exceed 0.5 percent available phosphate
- Local rule: Where phosphorus is allowed — a new or repaired lawn, or one that tested deficient — application may not exceed 0.25 lb P2O5 per 1,000 sq ft per application and 0.5 lb per year; a natural organic turf fertilizer may not exceed 1 lb of available phosphate per 1,000 sq ft per application
- Local rule: Enhanced-efficiency fertilizer is capped at 2.5 lb of total nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in a single application and 3.25 lb a year, and may not release faster than 0.7 lb per 1,000 sq ft per month
- Local rule: No fertilizer of any kind within 25 feet of waters as defined in RSA 431:3
- Local rule: Anyone applying pesticides on someone else's property must hold a Commercial Applicator licence from the Division of Pesticide Control
- Local rule: State pesticide policy is set by a standing Pesticide Control Board, which adopts the rules the Division then administers — an unusual arrangement worth knowing if you are chasing a rule change or an interpretation
- Locally suited product categories: Slow and controlled-release nitrogen, because the state law is written in terms of release rate rather than season; Phosphorus-free maintenance fertilizer, with a phosphorus starter reserved for new seeding or a documented deficiency and used at the law's low per-application ceiling; Fine fescue and fine-fescue mixes for thin, acidic, shaded upland lawns; Lime sized to a soil test — the requirement here is usually genuine rather than nominal; Leaf removal and dethatching tools, since a matted leaf layer under long snow is the state's leading cause of snow mould; Core aeration for the dense basal-till layer that sits under most New Hampshire lawns — and clippings offset a share of the first of those for free.
The mowing year in New Hampshire:
- Spring: Wait for 55°F soil rather than a date — the Seacoast and Coos County are three weeks apart
- Spring: Rake open snow-mould patches in March or April instead of spraying; the damage was done in November
- Spring: Look for vole runways once the snow goes and rake and overseed them rather than treating for anything
- Spring: Soil test if it has been three years — UNH asks for one before establishment and every three years after
- Summer: Mow high and let the lawn go dormant in a dry July: the dense till substratum means the roots have nowhere deeper to go
- Summer: Keep all fertilizer 25 feet back from surface water — that setback is state law here, not a courtesy
- Summer: Expect brown patch in the southern tier when nights stop cooling; it is rarer north of the notches
- Summer: Watch river-valley sand lawns for chinch bug in the hot dry strips along drives and roadsides
- Fall: Seed August 15 to September 30 — earlier within that window the further north you are
- Fall: The last fertilizer of the year goes down before September 15 in the north, October 1 in the south
- Fall: Apply lime now if the test asked for it; the freeze-thaw cycle works it in over winter
- Fall: Rake leaves off before lasting snow arrives, because a matted leaf layer is where snow mould starts
- Winter: Expect snow mould where snow settled on unfrozen ground, and plan next autumn's cleanup around it rather than buying a fungicide in March
- Winter: Keep snowbanks and plough piles off the turf where you can — the last piles to melt are where the mould sits longest
- Winter: Do not fertilize; the state's law is written around release rates and the ground is not taking any of it
- Winter: Send soil samples in the quiet months; the UNH lab runs about three weeks and longer in spring

What This Costs
Nothing, again — and it is worth noticing how often that is the answer in lawn care. Removing the bag is less work than carrying it, and it returns a quarter of your fertilizer for free.
The myth was the expensive part. Bagging because clippings supposedly cause thatch has meant decades of homeowners doing extra work to throw away nitrogen they then purchased again.
Where money genuinely belongs is the remaining three quarters of the feeding, on your region’s schedule: when to fertilize your lawn.
Robotic mowers take this to its limit — no bag at all, a few millimetres of leaf tip returned every day.
