Should You Bag Grass Clippings? It Costs Nitrogen

Bagging your clippings is extra work that costs you fertilizer. That is the whole article, and it has numbers behind it.

Grass clippings run about 4 percent nitrogen, 2 percent potassium and 1 percent phosphorus, and extension research puts what they return at up to 25 percent of your lawn’s total fertilizer needs across a season. Every bag you drag to the kerb is nitrogen you will buy back in a bag later.

One exception worth knowing before you compost clippings rather than return them: clippings from turf treated with certain pasture-type herbicides stay active in the pile — herbicide carryover in compost covers which actives and how to test a suspect batch.

The water figure is why this works. Clippings are mostly moisture and soft leaf tissue, so they collapse and break down within a few days rather than accumulating. What is left behind is the mineral content, released back into the soil where the roots are.

Recycling clippings reduces the total nitrogen the lawn needs each season. That is not a marginal effect — a quarter of your feeding programme is roughly one application you do not have to make, on a lawn mown thirty-odd times a year.

And the labour comparison is one-directional: not bagging is less work than bagging. There is no version of this where collecting clippings saves you anything.

Clippings Do Not Cause Thatch

This is the belief that keeps people bagging, and it is wrong on the biology.

Thatch is a layer of undecomposed stems, crowns and roots — tough, fibrous, lignin-rich tissue that resists breakdown and builds up between the green growth and the soil.

Clippings are leaf tissue — 80 to 85 percent water, soft, and gone in days.

Extension research is consistent: returning clippings to the lawn does not harm the grass and does not contribute to thatch. The two things are made of different material and behave differently.

One real caveat. If you already have a thatch layer thicker than about half an inch, that existing layer slows everything down, including clipping breakdown — so clippings can add to a problem that is already there. The Three Times Bagging Is Right

Leaving clippings is the default, not an absolute — and NC State’s Carolina Lawns draws the line at the same place, in one sentence that contains both halves: “If clippings are heavy enough to hold the grass down or shade it, catch them or rake and remove them. Otherwise, do not bag the clippings. Allow them to fall into the turf where they will decay and release nutrients.” Note the test they give — smothering, not tidiness. Three situations meet it or beat it.

1. An active fungal outbreak. Clippings can carry spores across the lawn, so during a live disease episode collecting them limits the spread. Identify what you have first: lawn fungus identification. The clearest case is lawn rust, where the spores sit on the leaf surface and Illinois Extension says outright that the rust is removed by the mower blade — there, bagging is not damage control, it is the treatment carrying the inoculum away.

2. Weeds that have gone to seed. If dandelions have puffed or crabgrass has headed out, mowing broadcasts that seed. Bag those cuts, and better still mow before the seed heads form — one dandelion produces up to 15,000 seeds.

3. A cut that got away from you. When the grass is far too long, or wet, the clippings land as thick clumps that sit on the surface and smother what is underneath. Bag or rake that one cut, then go back to leaving them.

Notice that all three are temporary conditions. None of them is a reason to bag every week for years.

The same argument extends to the other thing that falls on a lawn: autumn leaves go back in through the mower rather than into bags — mulching leaves into the lawn has the research and the depth limit.

If You Are Getting Clumps, the Mowing Is Wrong

Clumping is the most common complaint about leaving clippings, and it is a symptom of how you mowed rather than an argument against mulching — the same is true of the other mowing complaint we get, which is stripes that will not hold.

Clippings need to be under about an inch to settle into the canopy and disappear. That length is not a separate rule to remember — it falls out of the one you should already be following: remove no more than a third of the blade height in a single cut. Do that and the clippings are automatically short enough.

So clumps mean one of three things:

  • You cut more than a third off, because you waited too long
  • You mowed wet grass, which sticks together
  • The blade is dull and tearing rather than cutting

All three are fixable without buying anything. The height and frequency logic is in lawn mowing height.

The third one has a caveat worth being straight about: sharpening is free if you already own a file and a vice, and it is a five-minute job with a purpose-made sharpener rather than a twenty-minute one. Either way the point is the same — a torn leaf tip dries out and mulches badly, so a sharp blade is what makes mulching work rather than an upgrade to it.

Clippings in New Mexico

The maths above is national. What changes locally is how fast clippings break down, how often the three bagging exceptions actually apply, and what the returned nitrogen is worth against your feeding calendar. For a Bermuda lawn across USDA zones 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a:

How fast they disappear here

Local humidity is Arid to semi-arid with very low humidity most of the year, broken by the monsoon — and the elevation range means Chama and Las Cruces share almost nothing climatically, and rainfall arrives as Roughly 8 to 15 inches across most of the populated areas, with a large share of it arriving in the North American monsoon between about June 15 and September 30 as heavy convective storms — which run off caliche and compacted ground rather than soaking in. In drier air clippings dry out before they decompose and can sit on the surface longer, so keeping each cut short matters more here than in a humid state. The upside is that the disease exception rarely applies.

Soil underneath: Calcareous desert soils across the basins and mesas, with caliche — a cemented lime hardpan — at shallow depth in much of the state; deeper alluvium along the Rio Grande and the river valleys, draining: Fast through the sandy desert soils until it reaches caliche, at which point it stops — a shallow lime pan perches water, blocks roots and turns a deep watering into a shallow one, so the depth to caliche matters more here than the surface texture does. pH: Alkaline, and specifically lime-buffered: NMSU's position is that soil pH here is controlled by the presence of calcium carbonate, which is why a percent-lime figure is a useful thing to test for and why pushing pH down is largely futile. Above pH 7.6 the iron chelate you buy matters — NMSU names EDDHA or DTPA over EDTA, and warns that DTPA should not be used above 7.6 at all — soil biology does the actual digesting, and near-neutral, moist, uncompacted soil does it fastest.

What the returned nitrogen is worth against your calendar

The local feeding window is New establishment gets 0.5 to 0.75 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft every other week for six to eight weeks. After that the calendar follows the grass, not the state: cool-season lawns in the north feed spring and autumn, warm-season lawns in the south feed through the warm months and stop well before dormancy. A quarter of the season's nitrogen coming back through clippings is roughly one of those applications you do not have to make — and in the transition zone, where the two grass families are fed in opposite halves of the year, it stretches whichever schedule you are actually on. When the exceptions actually apply here

  • Disease: Iron chlorosis — not a pathogen, but the most common reason a New Mexico lawn is yellow, and the one where buying the wrong chelate wastes the money entirely; Salinity injury from irrigation water and from salts accumulating above caliche, which reads as drought stress that watering does not fix; Spring dead spot on bermudagrass, appearing as the lawn greens up; Summer patch and other root-zone diseases on cool-season lawns in the north are documented in New Mexico — during an active episode of any of these, bag the cuts until it is under control.
  • Weeds that seed: Crabgrass in irrigated turf; Puncturevine — goathead, the signature southwestern hot-dry-ground annual and a tyre and bare-foot problem as much as a turf one; Field bindweed; Kochia and Russian thistle at the dry margins; Khakiweed and spurges in thin, hot, compacted ground — mowing over any of these once they have headed out spreads them, so time the cut before the seed forms or bag that pass.
  • Growth surges that cause clumping. Locally the post-emergent window is Spring and early autumn; in the south skip the June heat entirely, and in the north the usable autumn window closes by early October and seeding runs Warm-season lawns go in from late spring through midsummer once soil is thoroughly warm; cool-season lawns in the north go in late August into September. Establishment irrigation is the whole battle in either case — both sit in the growth flush, which is exactly when the one-third rule tightens the mowing interval and when a missed week produces clumps.
  • Frost ends the season: first frost Early September in the northern mountains; late October into November in the Mesilla Valley and the southern lowlands, last frost Late May to June at elevation; mid-March in the far south — clippings left on turf that has stopped growing do not break down, so the final cuts of the year are the ones most likely to sit.
  • Grasses grown here: Bermuda, Kentucky Bluegrass (the northern half — NMSU's line is that cool-season grasses work anywhere north of Socorro, plus Cloudcroft, Ruidoso and Silver City), Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, Buffalograss (the native warm-season option, and the one that matches the rainfall rather than fighting it), Zoysia — coarse-bladed grasses produce bulkier clippings that need shorter cuts to disappear cleanly.
  • Local rule: New Mexico has no statewide restriction on phosphorus in lawn fertilizer, so the phosphorus decision rests on a soil test — and specifically on an Olsen phosphorus result, the method NMSU names as the one that correlates with plant-available phosphorus in high-pH soils
  • Local rule: The Department of Agriculture certifies and licenses applicators, registers pesticide products and investigates suspected misuse; commercial, non-commercial and private applicator licences are separate categories
  • Local rule: New Mexico's Department of Agriculture is administratively part of New Mexico State University rather than a standalone executive department — which is why its pesticide pages sit on the university's own domain, and why the regulatory and the Extension answer often come from the same institution
  • Local rule: Municipal water restrictions and time-of-day watering rules in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces constrain a lawn programme here far more than any chemical rule does
  • Locally suited product categories: EDDHA-chelated iron specifically — NMSU names EDDHA as stable across all soil pH and warns that DTPA fails above pH 7.6, which covers much of the state, and EDTA is the wrong choice here outright; Buffalograss and improved bermudagrass seed and sod, chosen against the 24-inch warm-season water figure rather than on appearance; Irrigation audit equipment, catch cups and pressure-regulating heads, because a distribution uniformity near 0.50 is the default rather than a fault; Soil probes, to find the depth to caliche before designing any watering schedule; Gypsum where a saturated-paste test shows sodicity, not as a routine soil conditioner; Spring dead spot fungicides for bermudagrass lawns, applied in autumn rather than at the symptom — and clippings offset a share of the first of those for free.

The mowing year in New Mexico:

  • Spring: Pre-emergent on soil temperature — February in Las Cruces, May in Taos, and treating those as the same date is the commonest mistake here
  • Spring: Check the depth to caliche with a probe or a shovel before planning any irrigation change; it sets how deep a soaking can physically go
  • Spring: Do not lime, ever, unless a test asks: pH here is held up by calcium carbonate already in the soil
  • Spring: Audit the irrigation system before the pre-monsoon heat, not after it
  • Summer: NMSU's water figures are the ones to plan against: cool-season turf uses about 0.26 to 0.50 inch a day in summer, roughly 1.8 to 3.5 inches a week, and about 38 inches over a year, against about 24 inches for warm-season turf
  • Summer: Schedule irrigation for the driest quarter of the lawn rather than the average — residential systems here average a lower-quarter distribution uniformity around 0.50, so half the lawn gets far less than the timer suggests
  • Summer: During the monsoon, turn the controller down: heavy convective rain on caliche runs off, but it still resets the soil moisture the system is watering for
  • Summer: If the lawn is yellow, treat it as iron availability before nitrogen, and buy EDDHA-chelated iron rather than EDTA
  • Fall: Cool-season lawns in the north: late August into September is both the seeding window and the most valuable feeding
  • Fall: Warm-season lawns in the south: last feeding well before dormancy, and expect colour loss from the first frost regardless
  • Fall: Take a soil test and specify the New Mexico set — Olsen phosphorus, saturated paste EC, sodium adsorption ratio and percent lime
  • Fall: Reduce irrigation gradually rather than stopping it; a dry autumn here is normal and turf goes into winter thirsty
  • Winter: Warm-season lawns are dormant and brown from first frost until the ground warms; that is normal, not winterkill
  • Winter: Water occasionally through a dry, windy winter — especially in the north, where an open winter desiccates turf with the ground frozen
  • Winter: Spot-treat winter annual weeds on dormant bermudagrass during mild spells
  • Winter: Plan species honestly against water: the 38-inch cool-season figure against 24 for warm-season is the whole argument in a state that gets 8 to 15 inches of rain

Stop Bagging in Four Steps

  1. Check your thatch layer onceTwo minutes

    Cut a small wedge of turf and look at the side. Spongy brown layer under half an inch: leave clippings from now on. Over half an inch: deal with the thatch first, because an existing layer slows everything down.

  2. Take the bag offNext cut

    Side-discharge or mulch. No special mower required — what matters is clipping length, not the deck.

  3. Mow on the one-third ruleOngoing

    Never remove more than a third of the blade height. That automatically keeps clippings under an inch, which is the length that settles in and disappears rather than clumping.

  4. Wait for dry grassEach cut

    Wet clippings stick together and clump regardless of length. Mowing dry is the difference between clippings that vanish and clippings that sit.

  5. Bag only for the three exceptionsAs needed

    Active fungal outbreak, weeds that have gone to seed, or a single overgrown cut that clumped. Then go straight back to leaving them.

  6. Reduce the feeding accordinglyYour regional feeding window

    You are now returning up to a quarter of the season's nitrogen. Keep feeding inside your regional window, but recognise that the lawn needs less of it from a bag than it did.

What This Costs

Nothing, again — and it is worth noticing how often that is the answer in lawn care. Removing the bag is less work than carrying it, and it returns a quarter of your fertilizer for free.

The myth was the expensive part. Bagging because clippings supposedly cause thatch has meant decades of homeowners doing extra work to throw away nitrogen they then purchased again.

Robotic mowers take this to its limit — no bag at all, a few millimetres of leaf tip returned every day.
