Should You Bag Grass Clippings? It Costs Nitrogen
Bagging grass clippings throws away up to a quarter of your lawn's nitrogen — and clippings do not cause thatch. The three times bagging is still right. Guide for Maine, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

Bagging your clippings is extra work that costs you fertilizer. That is the whole article, and it has numbers behind it.
Grass clippings run about 4 percent nitrogen, 2 percent potassium and 1 percent phosphorus, and extension research puts what they return at up to 25 percent of your lawn’s total fertilizer needs across a season. Every bag you drag to the kerb is nitrogen you will buy back in a bag later.
One exception worth knowing before you compost clippings rather than return them: clippings from turf treated with certain pasture-type herbicides stay active in the pile — herbicide carryover in compost covers which actives and how to test a suspect batch.

The water figure is why this works. Clippings are mostly moisture and soft leaf tissue, so they collapse and break down within a few days rather than accumulating. What is left behind is the mineral content, released back into the soil where the roots are.
Recycling clippings reduces the total nitrogen the lawn needs each season. That is not a marginal effect — a quarter of your feeding programme is roughly one application you do not have to make, on a lawn mown thirty-odd times a year.
And the labour comparison is one-directional: not bagging is less work than bagging. There is no version of this where collecting clippings saves you anything.
Clippings Do Not Cause Thatch
This is the belief that keeps people bagging, and it is wrong on the biology.
Thatch is a layer of undecomposed stems, crowns and roots — tough, fibrous, lignin-rich tissue that resists breakdown and builds up between the green growth and the soil.
Clippings are leaf tissue — 80 to 85 percent water, soft, and gone in days.
Extension research is consistent: returning clippings to the lawn does not harm the grass and does not contribute to thatch. The two things are made of different material and behave differently.
One real caveat. If you already have a thatch layer thicker than about half an inch, that existing layer slows everything down, including clipping breakdown — so clippings can add to a problem that is already there. The Three Times Bagging Is Right
Leaving clippings is the default, not an absolute — and NC State’s Carolina Lawns draws the line at the same place, in one sentence that contains both halves: “If clippings are heavy enough to hold the grass down or shade it, catch them or rake and remove them. Otherwise, do not bag the clippings. Allow them to fall into the turf where they will decay and release nutrients.” Note the test they give — smothering, not tidiness. Three situations meet it or beat it.
1. An active fungal outbreak. Clippings can carry spores across the lawn, so during a live disease episode collecting them limits the spread. Identify what you have first: lawn fungus identification. The clearest case is lawn rust, where the spores sit on the leaf surface and Illinois Extension says outright that the rust is removed by the mower blade — there, bagging is not damage control, it is the treatment carrying the inoculum away.
2. Weeds that have gone to seed. If dandelions have puffed or crabgrass has headed out, mowing broadcasts that seed. Bag those cuts, and better still mow before the seed heads form — one dandelion produces up to 15,000 seeds.
3. A cut that got away from you. When the grass is far too long, or wet, the clippings land as thick clumps that sit on the surface and smother what is underneath. Bag or rake that one cut, then go back to leaving them.
Notice that all three are temporary conditions. None of them is a reason to bag every week for years.
The same argument extends to the other thing that falls on a lawn: autumn leaves go back in through the mower rather than into bags — mulching leaves into the lawn has the research and the depth limit.
If You Are Getting Clumps, the Mowing Is Wrong
Clumping is the most common complaint about leaving clippings, and it is a symptom of how you mowed rather than an argument against mulching — the same is true of the other mowing complaint we get, which is stripes that will not hold.
Clippings need to be under about an inch to settle into the canopy and disappear. That length is not a separate rule to remember — it falls out of the one you should already be following: remove no more than a third of the blade height in a single cut. Do that and the clippings are automatically short enough.
So clumps mean one of three things:
- You cut more than a third off, because you waited too long
- You mowed wet grass, which sticks together
- The blade is dull and tearing rather than cutting
All three are fixable without buying anything. The height and frequency logic is in lawn mowing height.
The third one has a caveat worth being straight about: sharpening is free if you already own a file and a vice, and it is a five-minute job with a purpose-made sharpener rather than a twenty-minute one. Either way the point is the same — a torn leaf tip dries out and mulches badly, so a sharp blade is what makes mulching work rather than an upgrade to it.

The maths above is national. What changes locally is how fast clippings break down, how often the three bagging exceptions actually apply, and what the returned nitrogen is worth against your feeding calendar. For a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn across USDA zones 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a:
How fast they disappear here
Local humidity is Humid in summer but the season is short; long-lasting snow cover and a late spring matter more to a Maine lawn than August humidity does, and rainfall arrives as Roughly 40–48 inches, spread through the year, with snowmelt and mud season the period when anything spread on a lawn actually moves. In drier air clippings dry out before they decompose and can sit on the surface longer, so keeping each cut short matters more here than in a humid state. The upside is that the disease exception rarely applies.
Soil underneath: Thin, strongly acidic glacial till over bedrock across most of the interior (blueberry-barren country in the east); sandy outwash along the river valleys and the southern coastal plain, draining: Fast on the outwash sand and the shallow ledge soils that shed water downhill before roots reach it; slow on the compacted till and the coastal clay pockets that sit wet until late spring. pH: Strongly acidic — this is blueberry country, and the practical consequence is that the lime question depends on which grass you have: UMaine puts Kentucky bluegrass at pH 6.0 to 7.0, red fescue at 5.5 to 6.5, and tall fescue anywhere from 4.7 to 8.5, so a fine-fescue lawn may need no lime at all where a bluegrass lawn next door does — soil biology does the actual digesting, and near-neutral, moist, uncompacted soil does it fastest.
What the returned nitrogen is worth against your calendar
The local feeding window is UMaine is specific and restrained: no more than two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year, and if you feed once, do it between August 15 and September 15. Any remainder goes down in May after spring green-up, not before it. When the exceptions actually apply here
- Disease: Gray and pink snow mould — the state's defining turf disease, because Maine has the months of snow cover that create it; Red thread on ryegrass and fine fescue in a cool wet spring, which reads as a nitrogen shortage more than an infection; Dollar spot; Necrotic ring spot on sodded bluegrass are documented in Maine — during an active episode of any of these, bag the cuts until it is under control.
- Weeds that seed: Dandelion; White clover; Broadleaf plantain; Ground ivy; Common chickweed — mowing over any of these once they have headed out spreads them, so time the cut before the seed forms or bag that pass.
- Growth surges that cause clumping. Locally the post-emergent window is June, then a narrow late-August to mid-September window. Maine's usable autumn is the shortest in New England and seeding runs Mid-August into early September, matching the same late-summer window as the feeding. Spring seeding means nursing the stand through the summer with a short season to recover in — both sit in the growth flush, which is exactly when the one-third rule tightens the mowing interval and when a missed week produces clumps.
- Frost ends the season: first frost Late August to early September in Aroostook and the western mountains; early to mid-October on the southern coast, last frost Late May to early June inland and in the north; early to mid-May along the York and Cumberland coast — clippings left on turf that has stopped growing do not break down, so the final cuts of the year are the ones most likely to sit.
- Grasses grown here: Kentucky Bluegrass, Red Fescue (UMaine's low-input recommendation, and it tolerates a pH of 5.5 where bluegrass will not), Tall Fescue (the widest pH tolerance of the four and the best summer heat tolerance), Perennial Ryegrass — coarse-bladed grasses produce bulkier clippings that need shorter cuts to disappear cleanly.
- Local rule: Maine regulates the shop rather than the spreader: under 38 M.R.S. §419, a retailer may not sell phosphorus-containing lawn or turf fertilizer without posting a department-approved sign, mounted between four and seven feet above the floor where the product is displayed, stating that it is not appropriate for non-agricultural lawns or turf — except where a laboratory soil test shows phosphorus is needed, or the fertilizer is for establishing a new lawn
- Local rule: That is a point-of-sale duty, not an application ban, which makes Maine different from Connecticut and Vermont next door: the state does not forbid you from spreading it, it forbids the shop from selling it unwarned
- Local rule: South Portland went further than the state and prohibits synthetic fertilizers on private property as well as public
- Local rule: Maine has the country's densest municipal pesticide regime for home lawns: 28 jurisdictions restrict pesticides in some form. Portland restricts synthetic pesticides on all lawns and landscapes, public and private, with the private-property provisions in force since July 2019
- Local rule: South Portland's Land Management Ordinance makes organic landcare the primary method for lawns, gardens, athletic fields, parks and playgrounds, allowing synthetic pesticides only in narrow circumstances such as products listed as allowed for organic production or commercial agriculture
- Local rule: Statewide, policy is set by a seven-member public Board of Pesticides Control rather than by departmental staff, and a certified licensed applicator must be on site whenever pesticides are applied for hire or in a public place
- Locally suited product categories: OMRI-listed and organic-programme-compatible products, because in Portland and South Portland they are the lawful option rather than the premium one; Phosphorus-free maintenance fertilizer — and if you are buying phosphorus, expect the retailer's warning sign and have the soil test that answers it; Red fescue and fine-fescue mixes for thin, acidic, shaded ground, which is most of Maine; Slow-release nitrogen sized to a two-pound annual ceiling rather than a per-bag rate; Leaf collection and dethatching equipment, since matted leaves under long snow drive the state's worst disease; Lime matched to the species you actually grow, not to a single statewide pH target — and clippings offset a share of the first of those for free.
The mowing year in Maine:
- Spring: Rake open snow-mould patches at melt and overseed the dead areas; the damage was done the previous November
- Spring: Rake and reseed vole runways rather than treating for anything
- Spring: Hold any nitrogen until after spring green-up — UMaine's May application is explicitly the remainder, not the opener
- Spring: Match lime to your species, not to a statewide rule: red fescue is content at pH 5.5, Kentucky bluegrass wants 6.0 to 7.0
- Summer: Mow at three inches or more where the lawn is tall fescue or ryegrass
- Summer: Stay inside two pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft for the whole year — that is the ceiling, not a target
- Summer: Let an unirrigated lawn go dormant in a dry July; the season is too short to fight it
- Summer: Check your town before buying anything: 28 Maine jurisdictions restrict pesticides, and in some of them a synthetic product is not lawful on your own lawn
- Fall: August 15 to September 15 is the single most useful fortnight of the Maine lawn year — feed and seed in it
- Fall: Take a soil test now; the free kit comes from the county Extension office and the lab needs two to four weeks
- Fall: Lime after the test, so the freeze-thaw cycle works it in over winter
- Fall: Get leaves off before lasting snow: matted leaves under snow are where snow mould begins
- Winter: Nothing goes down — the ground is frozen or covered, and mud season is when it would move
- Winter: Keep plough piles off the turf where you can; the last snow to melt holds mould the longest
- Winter: Expect desiccation on wind-scoured ridges and shore-facing lawns where snow blows clear
- Winter: Read your municipal land management ordinance over the winter rather than in May, if you live in one of the towns that has one

What This Costs
Nothing, again — and it is worth noticing how often that is the answer in lawn care. Removing the bag is less work than carrying it, and it returns a quarter of your fertilizer for free.
The myth was the expensive part. Bagging because clippings supposedly cause thatch has meant decades of homeowners doing extra work to throw away nitrogen they then purchased again.
