Robot Mower Winter Storage: The Standard Advice Is Wrong
The float-charger advice everyone repeats was written for lead-acid batteries. A robot mower has a lithium pack, and the manual is the number that governs.

The advice that does not transfer
Search for winter equipment storage and you will find a consistent instruction: keep the battery charged, and use a float charger if the machine will sit for months. Penn State’s equipment guidance puts it plainly — batteries “must maintain a charge through their storage period to prevent freezing and damage over winter,” and it suggests rotating “a small battery maintainer or ‘float’ charger among your machinery.”
That advice is correct, and it is written about lead-acid batteries. A lead-acid battery left discharged sulfates and can freeze, so keeping voltage up over winter genuinely protects it.
A robot mower does not have one. It has a lithium-ion pack, which fails in different ways and is not generally stored at full charge on a continuous charger. Manufacturers publish a storage charge level for their own machines, and that model-specific figure is the one that governs — not the general equipment rule, and not a number from a forum.
So the honest instruction is short: open the manual, find the storage charge guidance for your model, and follow it. This is one of the few maintenance questions where a generic answer is worse than no answer.
Where to put it
Penn State’s other point transfers directly, because it is about environment rather than chemistry:
The risk is “damage due to condensation, low temperatures, and moisture infiltration” — and the “variability of weather conditions tends to be more detrimental to equipment” than steady cold.
That second half is the useful one. An unheated shed that freezes at night and thaws in weak winter sun, over and over, drives condensation cycles through the machine’s electronics. A consistently cold garage is kinder than a swinging one.
The order of preference: heated indoor space, then an attached garage, then a dry outbuilding. Outside on the dock is last, and on a five-month northern winter it is not really an option.
Two more reasons to bring it in, both from UF/IFAS’s list of operational concerns with these machines: potential for theft — a valuable object sitting unattended in a garden for months — and fire ant activity near electrical components, which is a warm-sheltered-enclosure problem that applies to nesting insects and rodents generally in cold weather.
Change the blades going in, not coming out
Iowa State’s winter garden guidance makes the general point that winter is the time to service lawn equipment and sharpen blades. On a robot mower the blades are not sharpened — they are replaced, and they are cheap: a 30 to 36-blade pack runs about $12 to $32.
Do it before storage rather than in spring, for one practical reason. Spring green-up is the period of fastest growth in the year, and it is exactly when you least want to discover that the machine is running on worn blades and tearing rather than cutting. If the dock unplugs and lifts easily, bring it in. UF/IFAS lists lightning risk to docking stations as an operational concern, and a dock left connected through a winter of storms is carrying that exposure for months with no machine on it to justify it. It is also one fewer thing to hit with a snow shovel or a plough.
If the dock is fixed and genuinely weatherproof, disconnect the power supply and leave the base in place — remapping is usually unnecessary if it has not moved, which is a real argument for leaving a well-sited dock alone.

This is the part a national guide cannot answer, and the spread across our state pages is larger than most people assume:

- Montana and the northern Plains — similar, with the added risk that a chinook strips the snow and the lawn desiccates while the mower is away
- Connecticut, Pennsylvania, the Midwest — roughly four months
- The Gulf Coast and lower South — a few weeks of dormancy rather than a season
- Hawaii — no frost date at any elevation where lawns are kept, so there is no off-season at all. Blade replacement becomes continuous rather than annual

Spring, briefly
Coming out of storage: charge fully before the first run, check that the blades you fitted in autumn are still the ones on it, clear the dock contacts, and expect the first mapping run to take longer if anything in the garden moved over winter.
