The first thing to do about a bare spot is measure it against your fist.

Wisconsin Extension puts it plainly: a spot smaller than your fist needs nothing. The surrounding grass spreads into it within a few weeks, and anything you buy for it is money spent on a job the lawn was going to do for free.

The bigger ones are worth work — but not the work most people do. A bare patch is a symptom, and filling it without finding the cause is how the same square foot ends up being reseeded three years running.

When the Answer Is Do Nothing

Grass spreads. Bermuda, St. Augustine, zoysia and Kentucky bluegrass all send out runners or rhizomes, and even the bunch-type grasses tiller outward from the crown. A small gap in an otherwise healthy lawn is a temporary condition.

Under a fist: leave it. Keep mowing at the right height, keep watering properly, and it closes.

That advice is worth stating first because the whole repair industry is built on the opposite assumption. A patch kit, a bag of seed and an afternoon are the default response to a gap the lawn would have handled by itself.

The threshold is not exact — a fist is a rule of thumb, and a bunch-type grass like tall fescue closes gaps more slowly than a spreading grass. But the principle holds: small gaps in healthy turf are self-correcting, and large gaps in unhealthy turf are not, no matter what you spread on them.

The Shape Tells You the Cause

This is the step that decides whether your repair lasts. Stand up, look at the whole lawn, and read the geometry before you buy anything.

What shape is the bare area?

Match what you see from a standing position — the shape narrows the cause faster than anything you can dig up.

Sharp circles with a dark ring

Small, sharply defined dead circles, very often surrounded by a ring of unusually dark, taller grass. That halo is the diagnosis: diluted nitrogen at the edge fertilizes the lawn. The dead centre is a separate mechanism — NC State now points to lactic acid rather than nitrogen as the main cause of the kill.

Straight edges and rectangles

Nothing biological makes a straight line. Straight-edged dead areas are mechanical or chemical: a spreader pass that overlapped, a fuel or fertilizer spill, a hot mower deck left parked, or a scalped high spot.

Irregular patches that lift like a rug

Irregular dying areas that spread, do not respond to water, and pass the pull test: grab the turf and tug. If it lifts loose because the roots are gone, you have grubs or another root feeder. Birds or skunks tearing at the lawn is the second sign.

Fix the cause: confirm by cutting a square-foot flap and counting before you treat anything. Reseeding over a live infestation feeds it.

Thin strips and shaded ground

Thin, worn areas following a line people walk, a gate, or the route from the driveway to the door: that is compaction, and seed alone will not fix it because roots cannot penetrate. Thin areas under a tree or along a north wall are shade, and no amount of seed makes sun-grass grow in dark.

The Repair, in Six Steps

Once the cause is handled, the repair itself is straightforward. Iowa State and NC State describe the same sequence.

  1. Rake out the dead material. Dead thatch is a barrier between seed and soil. Remove it, not just loosen it.
  2. Loosen the soil. Scratch the surface for a small patch; for a genuinely bare area, loosen the top 4 to 6 inches, fill any low spot and smooth it so the repair does not become a puddle.
  3. Add compost if the soil is the problem. Working organic matter in before seeding improves water retention and speeds germination.
  4. Mix the seed with a thin layer of soil or compost and spread it. Seed on top of hard ground blows away, dries out or feeds birds.
  5. Press it down. Foot, roller, or the back of a rake. This is the step that creates seed-to-soil contact and it is the one most often skipped.
  6. Keep the top 1.5 inches moist until it germinates — NC State puts it at “light watering two or three times a day for 7 to 21 days,” not a deep soak. Then taper toward normal watering over three or four weeks.

Topdressing: When the Soil Is the Problem

Topdressing is spreading a thin layer of compost or quality soil across the lawn to rebuild what is underneath. It is the right answer when the soil itself is why grass will not hold — compacted, structureless or organically dead ground — and unnecessary when the cause was a dog, a spill or shade.

The sequence matters. NC State is specific: core-aerate first, topdress second, so the organic matter has direct access into the soil profile instead of sitting on the surface as a layer.

Done in the wrong order, topdressing becomes a thin lid over the same compacted soil, and you have added a problem rather than solved one.

Holding The Seed Down

Two cheap items decide whether a repair takes, and both address the same failure: seed that washes, blows or gets eaten before it roots.

Timing: A Repair Is an Overseeding

There is no separate repair season. Filling a bare spot is overseeding a small area, so it follows the same window and the same rules — including the one that catches people out: a pre-emergent blocks your grass seed exactly as well as it blocks crabgrass. Bare Spots in Montana

Two things change locally: the month you can repair in, and which causes are common enough to suspect first. For a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn across USDA zones 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b:

Frost sets the outer limit — first frost Late August to early September at elevation and across the northern plains; mid to late September in the warmer western valleys and the lower Yellowstone, last frost Mid to late May in the valleys, into June at elevation — the frost-free season in parts of Montana is under 100 days — and a repair sown too close to that first date will not root before the ground hardens.

Which cause to suspect first here

  • Soil: Glacial till soils across the northern and central plains (Scobey, the state soil since 2015, covers more than 700,000 acres and carries visible masses of lime and gypsum); alluvial valley soils west of the Continental Divide and thin stony ground at elevation, draining: Moderate to slow on the till plains, which are very deep and well drained by soil-survey standards but seal at the surface and shed a hard rain; fast in the gravelly valley alluvium and on the thin soils at elevation, where wind takes the moisture the soil does not. pH: Slightly to moderately alkaline through the plains soils, with free lime in the profile — which is why Montana and Wyoming use the Olsen phosphorus test rather than the Bray test most of the country runs. Ask the laboratory for Olsen P by name: a Bray result on this ground understates phosphorus and the recommendation built on it is wrong. Compaction and standing water are the leading local suspects, which means aeration comes before seed and topdressing is often genuinely worth it here.
  • Match the seed to what is already there: Kentucky Bluegrass, Creeping Red Fescue and Chewings Fescue (MSU's standard mix puts them at 30 percent, not as an afterthought), Perennial Ryegrass (the 10 percent that covers the seedbed while bluegrass germinates), Tall Fescue (workable in the western valleys, less reliable where winter arrives without snow) — a repair in the wrong species stays visible as a different colour and blade width, which is a slower version of the problem you were fixing.

  • Rain and humidity set your watering load: Roughly 13 to 15 inches across the eastern plains, rising toward 20 inches and more in the western valleys, with much of the western share arriving as winter snow rather than growing-season rain. Humidity: Dry and windy, with the Continental Divide splitting the state — the western valleys take Pacific moisture in winter, the eastern plains are continental and semi-arid, and neither behaves like a humid-climate disease guide expects — and a seedbed has to stay moist through it.
  • The two windows that constrain a repair. Pre-emergent timing here is Crabgrass pre-emergent as soil holds 55°F at 2 inches, which is generally May and can be late May at elevation — and crabgrass pressure in much of Montana is low enough that this is a decision rather than a default — a barrier down in that window stops your repair seed too. Post-emergent sprays run June, then late August into September. In a sub-100-day valley there is no third chance — hold those off a new repair until it has been mown several times. Feeding runs MSU's figure for most Montana conditions is 2 to 4 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year, split into two or three applications, with never more than 1½ pounds of available nitrogen going down at once. Where repair sits in the Montana year:

  • Summer: If the lawn is yellow on plains soil, suspect iron availability before reaching for more nitrogen
  • Summer: Dig for billbug larvae before writing a thinning slope off as sprinkler coverage
  • Fall: Late August into early September is the seeding window and the most valuable feeding at once
  • Fall: Keep the annual total inside 2 to 4 pounds of nitrogen across two or three applications

And the third thing on that shelf, which is not what it says it is. Hydro Mousse and products like it are sold as hydroseeding for the home, and they are not: real hydroseeding sprays a mulch slurry held together with a tackifier, and these spray seed and fertilizer tinted green with no mulch layer at all. None of these change the rule this whole article is built on. A bag repairs the symptom; if the spot had a cause — a rock, a drainage line, a dog, deep shade — it will be bare again next year with better mulch on it.

The Honest Summary

If the bare areas are narrow winding lines rather than patches, they are not really bare spots — see voles in the lawn, where the repair depends on whether your grass has runners to close them with.
