How to Fix Bare Spots in a Lawn — Or Leave Them
A bare spot smaller than your fist closes on its own. The bigger ones are a symptom — and the shape of the spot tells you which cause to fix first. Guide for Vermont, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

The first thing to do about a bare spot is measure it against your fist.
Wisconsin Extension puts it plainly: a spot smaller than your fist needs nothing. The surrounding grass spreads into it within a few weeks, and anything you buy for it is money spent on a job the lawn was going to do for free.
The bigger ones are worth work — but not the work most people do. A bare patch is a symptom, and filling it without finding the cause is how the same square foot ends up being reseeded three years running.

When the Answer Is Do Nothing
Grass spreads. Bermuda, St. Augustine, zoysia and Kentucky bluegrass all send out runners or rhizomes, and even the bunch-type grasses tiller outward from the crown. A small gap in an otherwise healthy lawn is a temporary condition.
Under a fist: leave it. Keep mowing at the right height, keep watering properly, and it closes.
That advice is worth stating first because the whole repair industry is built on the opposite assumption. A patch kit, a bag of seed and an afternoon are the default response to a gap the lawn would have handled by itself.
The threshold is not exact — a fist is a rule of thumb, and a bunch-type grass like tall fescue closes gaps more slowly than a spreading grass. But the principle holds: small gaps in healthy turf are self-correcting, and large gaps in unhealthy turf are not, no matter what you spread on them.
The Shape Tells You the Cause
This is the step that decides whether your repair lasts. Stand up, look at the whole lawn, and read the geometry before you buy anything.
What shape is the bare area?
Match what you see from a standing position — the shape narrows the cause faster than anything you can dig up.
Sharp circles with a dark ring
Small, sharply defined dead circles, very often surrounded by a ring of unusually dark, taller grass. That halo is the diagnosis: diluted nitrogen at the edge fertilizes the lawn. The dead centre is a separate mechanism — NC State now points to lactic acid rather than nitrogen as the main cause of the kill.

Straight edges and rectangles
Nothing biological makes a straight line. Straight-edged dead areas are mechanical or chemical: a spreader pass that overlapped, a fuel or fertilizer spill, a hot mower deck left parked, or a scalped high spot.
Fix the cause: for fertilizer burn, water deeply for several days to move salts past the roots. For scalping, raise the mower — see lawn mowing height.
Irregular patches that lift like a rug
Irregular dying areas that spread, do not respond to water, and pass the pull test: grab the turf and tug. If it lifts loose because the roots are gone, you have grubs or another root feeder. Birds or skunks tearing at the lawn is the second sign.
Fix the cause: confirm by cutting a square-foot flap and counting before you treat anything. Reseeding over a live infestation feeds it.
Thin strips and shaded ground
Thin, worn areas following a line people walk, a gate, or the route from the driveway to the door: that is compaction, and seed alone will not fix it because roots cannot penetrate. Thin areas under a tree or along a north wall are shade, and no amount of seed makes sun-grass grow in dark.

The Repair, in Six Steps
Once the cause is handled, the repair itself is straightforward. Iowa State and NC State describe the same sequence.
- Rake out the dead material. Dead thatch is a barrier between seed and soil. Remove it, not just loosen it.
- Loosen the soil. Scratch the surface for a small patch; for a genuinely bare area, loosen the top 4 to 6 inches, fill any low spot and smooth it so the repair does not become a puddle.
- Add compost if the soil is the problem. Working organic matter in before seeding improves water retention and speeds germination.
- Mix the seed with a thin layer of soil or compost and spread it. Seed on top of hard ground blows away, dries out or feeds birds.
- Press it down. Foot, roller, or the back of a rake. This is the step that creates seed-to-soil contact and it is the one most often skipped.
- Keep the top 1.5 inches moist until it germinates — NC State puts it at “light watering two or three times a day for 7 to 21 days,” not a deep soak. Then taper toward normal watering over three or four weeks.

Topdressing: When the Soil Is the Problem
Topdressing is spreading a thin layer of compost or quality soil across the lawn to rebuild what is underneath. It is the right answer when the soil itself is why grass will not hold — compacted, structureless or organically dead ground — and unnecessary when the cause was a dog, a spill or shade.
The sequence matters. NC State is specific: core-aerate first, topdress second, so the organic matter has direct access into the soil profile instead of sitting on the surface as a layer.
Done in the wrong order, topdressing becomes a thin lid over the same compacted soil, and you have added a problem rather than solved one.

Two cheap items decide whether a repair takes, and both address the same failure: seed that washes, blows or gets eaten before it roots.

Bare Spots in Vermont
Two things change locally: the month you can repair in, and which causes are common enough to suspect first. For a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn across USDA zones 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a:
Your repair window, and what fills the gap
Mid-August to early September. Vermont does not have New Hampshire's spare fortnight: seed sown in late September in the Kingdom goes into winter without a root system
Cool-season lawns here close small gaps by tillering and, where bluegrass is in the mix, by rhizome. Larger gaps need seed, in the late-summer window above.
Frost sets the outer limit — first frost Early September in the Northeast Kingdom and the higher valleys; early October in the Champlain Valley and along the Connecticut River, last frost Late May in the Kingdom and mountain towns, mid-May in the Champlain Valley — the growing season in Island Pond is weeks shorter than in Burlington — and a repair sown too close to that first date will not root before the ground hardens.
Which cause to suspect first here
- Soil: Loamy glacial till over the hills and mountains (Tunbridge, the state soil, shallow to bedrock); lacustrine clay across the Champlain Valley, laid down under a glacial lake, draining: Fast on the shallow upland till, to the point of drying out in a hot summer; slow on the valley clay, which sits wet in spring, cracks in late summer and compacts under a mower before the upland lawns do. pH: Acidic across the till uplands under forest soils; the Champlain Valley clays run closer to neutral and sometimes above it, so a statewide assumption about lime is wrong in one of Vermont's two main soil regions. Compaction and standing water are the leading local suspects, which means aeration comes before seed and topdressing is often genuinely worth it here.
- Match the seed to what is already there: Kentucky Bluegrass, Fine Fescues (the honest choice for thin hill soils, shade and no irrigation), Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue (workable in the Champlain and lower Connecticut valleys, marginal in the Northeast Kingdom) — a repair in the wrong species stays visible as a different colour and blade width, which is a slower version of the problem you were fixing.
- Root feeders documented here: European chafer (suited to a cold state: later in the root zone in autumn, earlier in spring, which moves the window off the usual calendar); Japanese beetle; Voles, working under months of snow and leaving surface runways that appear all at once at melt — if the turf lifts loose, these are what to match against before treating.
- Diseases that leave dead patches: Gray and pink snow mould — the leading turf disease of the state, because Vermont has the snow cover that makes it one; expect it annually rather than occasionally; Red thread (cool wet spring on ryegrass and fine fescue, reading as a nitrogen shortage); Dollar spot — a patch with a defined edge or coloured lesions is a disease, not a bare spot, and reseeding it treats nothing. - Weeds waiting for the gap: Dandelion; White clover; Ground ivy; Broadleaf plantain; Common chickweed — bare soil is exactly the condition they germinate in, which is why an unfilled spot gets worse rather than staying the same size.
- Rain and humidity set your watering load: Roughly 40–45 inches, distributed through the year, with snowmelt and spring rain the period when phosphorus actually leaves a lawn and reaches Lake Champlain. Humidity: Humid summers, but short ones — and deep lasting snow cover through the winter is the defining feature for turf here rather than summer humidity — and a seedbed has to stay moist through it.
- The two windows that constrain a repair. Pre-emergent timing here is Crabgrass pre-emergent as soil holds 55°F at 2 inches — usually mid-May in the Champlain Valley and later in the hills; in the coldest towns crabgrass pressure is low enough that the question is whether to bother — a barrier down in that window stops your repair seed too. Post-emergent sprays run Late May through June, then a short late-August to mid-September window. Vermont's autumn window is the narrowest in New England — hold those off a new repair until it has been mown several times. Feeding runs Late spring and late August to early September, with the late-summer application carrying the year. Get it down early — the growing season closes fast north of Rutland, and a starter feeding at seeding is one of the few times those jobs belong together.
- Local rule: 10 V.S.A. § 1266b, in force since January 1, 2012, prohibits applying phosphorus fertilizer to turf — defined broadly as land in closely mowed managed grasses, residential and commercial property, public land and parks included
- Local rule: The exception is a soil test from the last 18 months showing the turf is phosphorus deficient; a new lawn also needs a test showing deficiency, so 'it is a new lawn' is not on its own a defence here the way it is in Connecticut
- Local rule: Vermont also regulates the shop rather than only the spreader: a retailer selling phosphorus fertilizer where consumers reach it must display non-phosphorus product separately and post a sign of at least 8.5 by 11 inches explaining phosphorus runoff and the state law
- Local rule: Since July 1, 2025 under Act 182 of 2024, applying neonicotinoid pesticides to turf is prohibited in Vermont, as is applying them to ornamental plants — including soil drench, basal bark and tree injection. In practice this rules out the imidacloprid and clothianidin season-long grub products sold in most of the country, and pushes grub control here toward chlorantraniliprole timing and cultural measures
- Local rule: Act 182 also bans outdoor neonicotinoid application to any crop during bloom, and from 2029 the use of neonicotinoid-treated cereal and soybean seed
- Local rule: Vermont's pesticide rule reaches homeowner use, not only professional use — the Agency regulates both under the Vermont Rule for the Control of Pesticides
- Locally suited product categories: Chlorantraniliprole grub products and cultural control, because the neonicotinoid alternative is not lawful on Vermont turf; Phosphorus-free maintenance fertilizer as the default, with any phosphorus purchase tied to a soil test less than 18 months old; Fine fescue and fine-fescue mixes for shallow, acidic, shaded hill lawns; Core aeration — a genuine need on Champlain Valley clay rather than a general recommendation; Leaf removal and dethatching equipment, since matted leaves under long snow drive the state's worst disease; Lime sized to a test, and only where the test asks — the valley clays frequently do not.
Where repair sits in the Vermont year:
- Spring: Rake open snow-mould patches at melt and overseed the dead spots rather than reaching for a fungicide in April
- Spring: Rake and reseed vole runways — they look alarming and need nothing else
- Spring: Wait for 55°F soil before any pre-emergent; in the Kingdom that can be late May
- Spring: On Champlain Valley clay, stay off the lawn until it has drained — a mower on wet clay compacts it for the season
- Summer: Mow high; the shallow Tunbridge-type upland soils have no deep water for the roots to reach
- Summer: Check the soil test date before buying anything with phosphorus in it — the exception in Vermont law runs on an 18-month clock
- Summer: Do not buy a neonicotinoid grub product: applying neonicotinoids to turf has been prohibited in Vermont since July 1, 2025
- Summer: Watch Champlain Valley lawns for compaction cracking as the clay dries
- Fall: Seed mid-August to early September — this is the whole window, not the start of it
- Fall: The late-August to early-September feeding is the year's most valuable application
- Fall: Lime only where the test asks: the valley clays often do not need it even though the hill soils do
- Fall: Clear leaves before lasting snow, because matted leaves under snow are where snow mould starts
- Winter: Nothing goes down: the ground is frozen or snow-covered, and snowmelt is exactly when phosphorus reaches Lake Champlain
- Winter: Keep plough piles and snowbanks off turf where possible — the last piles to melt hold mould longest
- Winter: Expect winter desiccation on exposed wind-scoured ridges where snow blows clear
- Winter: Book the soil test now; UVM prices a basic nutrient test at $17 and has separate codes for lawn establishment and lawn maintenance

What you are paying the premium for is the mulch, and it is worth understanding why, because it targets the exact failure described above: the surface drying out during germination. A mulch that swells with water and holds it around the seed does by chemistry what you would otherwise do by standing there with a hose three times a day.
That framing also settles the choice between the two versions on the shelf. The premium bag’s engineered mulch buys you margin for error; the cheaper one assumes you will be there to water. The Honest Summary
If the bare areas are narrow winding lines rather than patches, they are not really bare spots — see voles in the lawn, where the repair depends on whether your grass has runners to close them with.
Most bare-spot advice starts with seed. It should start with a fist and a look from standing height.
Under a fist, do nothing. Over a fist, find out why the grass died there before you spend anything — because the four common causes are a dog, a machine, an insect and the soil, and only one of those is solved by a bag of seed. Fix the cause, then repair in your seeding window, and the spot stops being an annual event.

How do I fix bare spots in my lawn?
First check the size. Wisconsin Extension is blunt about this: a spot smaller than your fist needs nothing at all, because the surrounding grass closes it within a few weeks. For anything larger, rake out the dead material, loosen the soil, mix seed with a little soil or compost, spread it, press it down for seed-to-soil contact, and keep the top 1.5 inches moist until it germinates. But do that second — first work out why the grass died there, because filling a spot without fixing the cause just buys you the same spot next year.
What causes bare patches in a lawn?
Extension services list the same set repeatedly: the wrong grass for the site, mowing too low, overwatering, overfertilizing, compacted soil, poor drainage, heavy shade, low soil pH, excessive thatch, and insects such as chinch bugs. Notice how many of those are maintenance choices rather than accidents — which is why the shape and location of the spot is more diagnostic than the spot itself.
Can I just throw grass seed on a bare spot?
It will mostly fail. Seed lying on dead thatch or hard soil does not germinate — it needs contact with soil and consistent moisture in the top 1.5 inches. Rake the dead material out, scratch or loosen the surface, mix the seed into a thin layer of soil or compost, and press it down. The pressing and the watering are the two steps people skip, and they are the two that decide the outcome.
What is topdressing and do I need it?
Topdressing means spreading a thin layer of compost or quality soil over the lawn to rebuild the soil underneath. NC State notes that where soil problems exist, organic matter used as topdressing begins to rebuild structure as part of reseeding — and that you core-aerate first and topdress second, so the material has direct access into the soil profile rather than sitting on the surface. It is worth doing when the soil itself is the problem, and unnecessary when the cause was shade or a dog.
When is the best time to repair bare spots?
The same window as overseeding, because that is what a repair is. For cool-season lawns that is late summer to early autumn — warm soil for germination, cooling nights for growth, and very little weed seed competing. Spring is the fallback. Warm-season lawns are repaired with sod, sprigs or plugs in early summer rather than seed, because those grasses spread by runners.
Why do the same bare spots come back every year?
Because the repair treated the symptom. A spot that returns in the same place has a cause still sitting there: compaction from a path people walk, a low area that stays wet, shade from a tree that keeps growing, a dog with a routine, or a buried obstruction. Repeat repairs in the same square foot are the clearest signal you can get that the problem is the site rather than the seed.
